Looking for ideas for Christmas in Europe
Discussion
We'll be in Europe (Northern Italy) until the 22nd December - we don't want to have to return to the UK at that time.
I'll have our car so can drive pretty much anywhere.
Looking for suggestions on what we could do we like city breaks - so maybe Switzerland for a couple of days, then down to Barcelona, and take the ferry back to the UK/Ireland?

You could do a lot worse than doing a Spanish highlights trip. Barcelona, Valencia, Logrono and San Sebastian should cover it. Then add in a night or 2 in either Bilbao or Santander - whichever one you're getting the ferry from.
You can also get a ferry from Civitavecchia to Barcelona if you fancy it

Last year we skied in northern Italy (San candido) until the 23rd then drove to Vienna for Christmas.
The 24th is the main event there so we ate early and attended several of the main midnight masses (loads of churches in the centre, all within an easy walk of each other). This also meant were able to book very last minute for Xmas dinner at the Hotel Sacher, which was wonderful. Most of the museums are open Xmas day so we bimbled around a few then settled in for the night at Loos American bar.
Made for a great Xmas, would recommend it but also realise it’s a bit of a schlep back to UK from there. We started out on the trip from Lausanne so stopped off for another day’s skiing on the way home.
Need to plan something for this year, again starting out from Switzerland, so keen to see what you come up with.

I like the idea of driving down to Rome and taking the ferry to Barcelona. You can also get a ferry from Civitavecchia to Barcelona if you fancy it

Now, I hadn’t thought about going east. We’ll be in Bormio until the 22nd (though it is flexible, I don’t need to be in the UK until the 3rd Jan, so can just about go anywhere.). Vienna looks nice - and I’ve not been for 30 years so might need to see what’s changed since then.
Decisions, decisions.
