From a slide taken in the 1960s. Somewhere in England, looks like a cathedral - but any idea which one please?

Could it be Guildford Cathedral?

I don't think it is. The arches are a bit narrower at Guildford. (And Guildford is brick)

It's Guildford IMO.

Correct arches
Correct outlook/view
Correct stonework (see linked image)

That's remarkable detective work!

I agree the three arches are distinctive, but I can't figure out what's going on above it. This is the closest match I can find:

It was built in 1936, which is far too early for the photo - but it looks as if the whole upper section is open to the air, perhaps being rebuilt? Seems a bit odd after only c.30 years.

Actually I'm not sure that's the right view - the arches are all the same size whereas in my photo the middle one is bigger.

Actually maybe the big white area is not open sky, but a floodlit screen for some kind of epic performance. The lights could be on that framework on top of the recess.

Just reading about it and there was a pause in the building during the war and then lack of materials and money meant it took time to get going again. This photo shows the west end open in '58/59 so possibly yours is part way through the build of the wall?

I reckon it's open & they are building materials on the floor in front.

The more I look the more I think it's Guildford (again) wobble

Pretty sure that's Guildford too....had to do a solo chorister gig infront of half the roman Catholic Church when I was 8 years old, that photo gives me the "FEAR"

My first thought was Guildford as well.

I spent a few years being guided home by the illuminated golden angel on it's roof whilst at the University of Surrey campus just below it. smile

Good find! It could well be 1958-9. Just the sort of thing my parents would have gone to see.

In the same box was this - but the style seems much more traditional to me, so maybe it was somewhere else:

Random fact - I used to know the son and one of the daughters of the then-Bishop of Guildford, the Adie family.
