What to do?

Mrs.vixen has just booked up 3 nights in Edinbugh for our 25th anniversary covering and including the 31st October.

Haven't been to Edinburgh since I was a kid in the early '80s so looking for recomendations for stuff to see and do during the day & nice places to eat.
Makar's Mash has already been mentioned to me by her so far.

Any whisky tasting/places recommendations would also be welcome. wink

Cheers! smile

The Kitchin is fantastic. He also has the Scran and Scallie for a more relaxed atmosphere. Hawksmoor have a restaurant there which is always good. Smith & Gertrude in Stockbridge is a great spot for some cheese and a couple of glasses of wine.

Loads of nice places, you'll have blast.

Le Bistrot, located within the French Institute on the corner of the Lawnmarket (top of the Royal Mile) and George IV Bridge.
A little known gem which is a real touch of France in the middle of Edinburgh. Great for a relaxing but delicious lunch.

Kitchen (mentioned above)
Number One (at Balmoral) ££ but great for special occasion
New Chapter
Baileys - pub food in Stockbridge - great pub
The Ship on the Shore ( good fish restaurant in Leith)
The Witchery (top of royal mile)
The Table (only 10 seats around the chefs cooking area) 10 min walk from Princess street

Had good meals in all, plenty in Edinburgh to choose from.

Not sure if it's still as good but a pint in the Diggers was always a must do a few years ago

Definitely have a look & get stuff booked, otherwise it’s hard in Edinburgh to get a reservation at short notice.

This is a pretty good Thai that doesn’t look like much from the outside but busy & very tasty!

Leith is quite decent for fish restaurants, there are a couple I've been to and I'd go back without hesitation. Can't remember what they're called but both just up Leith river from Malmaison.

Also recommend the river leith walk which is a pretty stroll through the city to said restaurants.

Get any train north over the forth bridge to North Queensferry, (it's about ten minutes and trains are every ten minutes or so) eat at the Wee Restaurant, train back.

Kitchin is good, and tom is a v nice guy, despite some salacious rumours by aggrevied parties with an axe to grind, but for something special martin wishart is better imo.

food wise loads of excellent places to eat.

Yup, we were at the Kitchin last year and it felt very much a conveyor belt experience, not one we’d recommend to anyone. I agree Martin Wishart is better

The surgeons Museum is good too, or more peculiarly the university anatomy one if its open, for weird st like elephant skeletons, dissected nervous systems, weird things in jars and the skeleton of notorious grave robber William Burke.

Also the greyfrosrs Kirk graveyard is pretty cool tbh.

Been looking to try that when staying at the Double Tree at North Queensferry. We’d like to next time but the cost of staying at the Double Tree for some reason has rocketed. We stayed last year for £80 per night but it’s doubled since and during the summer room rates have been as high as £240, maybe more. I guess prices have gone north due to Edinburgh becoming expensive in addition to the higher cost of things.

It was a good place to stay to experience a trip into Edinburgh on the train across the Fourth Bridge, and a walk on the Fourth Road Bridge to South Queensferry which is nice to explore. If you can get a good deal, I’d recommended it, as it also has a decent on site restaurant and parking is free with decent spaces.

my judgements are aged i should add, as not been in the area for 2 years...but never had it that bad! once had friends wedding meal in the PD bit once and he was fantastic spending an awful lot of time chatting, but although good i and been back more times, it was never great or star quality imo. bonnie badge is invariably fine but i think overpriced for what it serves up, but then its got holiday makers and US golfers to fleece so why wouldn't you charge that! not tried S/S and doubt i ever will as my name is mud in the area... i think tom became more focused on celeb to the detriment of food before the 'scandal' maybe its picked up again, but sounds like worse, which MW never lost focus.

Went to Kitchin about six weeks ago, Lunch service with two teenagers, we did the tasting menu, one family member is coeliac and the other vegetarian and have to say they were excellent and so was the food all ingredients locally sourced and it’s origin explained. Tom came around to all the tables to explain the dish you currently had. Really enjoyable.

My son works in hospitality and alerted me to the goings on at Kitchin, I'd never eat there.
