Going to Munich with a couple of mates in October but we’ll miss Oktoberfest itself unfortunately.
We’ve got a vague plan of doing the BMW museum &/or factory tour but are there any other unmissable things to see/do? Also, any great places to eat & drink that you can recommended? I’ve heard the Hofbrauhaus is worth a visit so that’s on the (very small) list so far. We’re staying centrally in the old town if that makes any difference.
Thanks in advance.

Not sure whether you are looking for a cultural or social visit or a bit of both. We’ve got a vague plan of doing the BMW museum &/or factory tour but are there any other unmissable things to see/do? BMW Museum/Welt are a good visit for a PHer. Similarly there is a transport museum (part of the Deutches Museum) right next to the Oktoberfest site at Theresienweise. A bit further out there is an aviation museum (and palace) at Scheleissheim.
For something a bit more cultural, there is an art district (Kunstareal) with a mixture of galleries from ancient to modern. If you want something more sombre, Dachau isn't far away.
I'm not a huge fan of Hofbrauhaus personally, it's a bit of a novelty because of its history and seemed to be full of stag-do types and binge drinking tourists when I last went in there. I much prefer Augustinier or Schneider which are also nearby. I love the weisswurst breakfast at Schneiders - what could be better than sausage, beer and pretzel in the morning (important - you don't eat the skin of the sausage but peel the meat out!)
Edited to add: The Olympic Park is next to BMW and is ok for a wander around. There is a tower you can go up for a view over the city.

Walk through the central parts of Munich. Visit Pinakothek der Moderne for accessible arts, stroll along the Isar, watch the surfers at the Eisbach bridge. There's lots of traditional restaurants, you'd just go in one as you pass by; only in the evening, you might want to have a table reserved.
Maybe places that don't get recommended so often - Schelling Salon and Osteria Italiana had all sorts of contemporary regular guests in the past century.

Hofbrauhaus, it's better if you can get a table on the terrace upstairs away from the stag do scene below, food is actually quite good too. The best thing we did was a Segway tour of the whole city, through the English Garden etc, it was a bit dangerous and some had a few spills but on the whole a great way to see everything.
Hofbrauhaus is worth a visit, even though more sophisticated alternatives exist.
I prefer the food at Ayingers which is very close to Hofbrauhaus.

If you have a decent sunny day, take the S8 train to Herrsching and walk up to Andechs.
It's a Monestery brewery on top of a hill with a biergarten. It's our favourite dayout from Munich.

For biergartens in Munich itself, my favourite is Augustiner near Hauptbahnhof.
Go to the self-service area, much better atmosphere.

Also assuming you'll all be travelling around together and especially from the airport.
Get Partner Tageskarte tickets, which cover up to 5 adults. The airport is Zone 5 so a ticket is 27.80 euro and valid on all public transport until 6am the next day.
You may find the MVV app easier to use than the ticket machines.
