Croatia - Dubrovnik to Split in rental car
Discussion
Planning a trip to Croatia, flying Helsinki - Dubrovnik then returning Split - Helsinki. Google maps suggests a route from Dubrovnik to Split that goes via the islands, so by-passes Bosnia, thus avoiding any border crossing hassle/delays, but also mentions tolls. Where are the toll roads on this route, and how does it work with a rental car?
And does anyone know if the sea is warm enough for swimming in May? Note we're used to cool seas

You don’t need to go via the islands to bypass Bosnia now- Croatia have built a bridge that opened earlier this year. And does anyone know if the sea is warm enough for swimming in May? Note we're used to cool seas
You can certainly do one way rentals from Dubrovnik airport to split airport with most of the big rental companies. Enterprise/amalo etc.
If you want to go through Bosnia or to the islands, the hire car companies will charge you a little bit more

And yes, swimming from April through to October is good. And does anyone know if the sea is warm enough for swimming in May? Note we're used to cool seas

The tolls are on the motorway once you get past Neum and are dead easy, all the booths are manned and they take cards. And does anyone know if the sea is warm enough for swimming in May? Note we're used to cool seas
Going to Split you broadly speaking have two choices - the motorway is easy, modern & quick. But boring. The coast road is significantly slower, 2-3 hours more and there will always be somebody doing 50km/h in front of you, but is a much nicer drive and means you can stop off for lunch at one of the coastal villages.

We are in Croatia next week flying into Zadar. We had originally planned to also stay in Montenegro for 5 nights. When I recently checked the cross-border fee, it’s now €125!! I’m sure when we originally booked, it was only either €35 or €50. Needless to say we’ve changed our plans now and staying in Croatia.
If you don't mind me saying so, you're missing out. Croatia is beautiful; Montenegro is stunning on a different level. Absolutely rammed with tourists around Kotor Bay but still utterly, ridiculously breathtaking and totally worth the car hire fee. Bloody long drive from Zadar, mind.Did it about 5 years ago, drove the coast road which was great. Can’t remember any hassle going through Bosnia, stopped there and had lunch actually.
Take a look at mount biokovo too it’s drivable to the summit. We did it and it was great. Something to do that’s not on the tourist trail.

Thanks all. Some useful info here. Anyone done any sea fishing around Dubrovnik and/or Split? And does renting a boat require a European Boat licence (or whatever it's called). I have a few years experience in motor boats, but no licence (not required here in FI).
No license required, or experience!Gassing Station | Holidays & Travel | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
