Just returned from Mallorca and really enjoyed the island and area (Illetas) we stayed in. 2 hr flight. 30mins to UK airport. Perfect.

I'm now doing that typical thing of Googling property in Mallorca for when I retire... which got me thinking of doing a long-term rental. I'm talking a few years away yet, but the thought of spending 1-3 months at a time in somewhere like Mallorca appeals very much.

So, a quick 10 min search and for example I found this https://www.idealista.com/en/inmueble/96601770/ - which looked reasonable for a month. I just wondered if anyone does similar in their retirement - long term rental (1-3 months) and have any tips on how best to do it for example of rental sites etc smile

I do for work (mainland), and find that 'proper' rents from idealista etc are too much hassle (timewise) with paperwork for what i need. Out of main season (which the one you have linked is anyway) then Air BNB does fine for me and saves a world of time. Turn up, get key, done smile

Thanks, hadn't thought about AirBNB. I'm surprised to hear it can be a lot of hassle though.

We had an apartment as a holiday home on Mallorca for over 12 years. Things to consider....

Out of season a lot of the island closes down.
Shoulder season can be hit and miss weather wise, you are likely to get better weather on the mainland.
Its expensive, fine if you are on holiday as you are paying for a short period and you get better beaches, better restaurants etc (arguably).
We found it was great for a holiday, great for a 2 month extended stay in holiday season

I wouldn't retire there and if I was thinking of doing spring or autumn somewhere with better weather than the UK I would be looking at the mainland. Just my thoughts based on experience!

Sorry for hijack OP, where would you recommend for long term rental, say, Nov to March on the mainland?

My wife and I have always thought about spending a few months a year somewhere with better weather when we retire and thinking renting would be less hassle and less complicated than buying.

Another option would be Canaries.

We did winter rentals on Costa del Sol for 15-years. We always looked for a smart penthouse and simply haggled with holiday letting agents to get a good price. We have now bought.

In winter, the boorish tourists have gone, but a large expat community remains resident. I know 2-couples who have left Mallorca having found the winter temperatures there to be too cold. There is occasional bad weather on the Costa, but generally, it rests in the 18 - 23C range, which I regard as very pleasant.

Costa del sol or costa blanca will have lots of properties available out of season and you can negotiate a price for a 3 month let. Weather won't be swimming in the sea or sunbathing weather most of tge time but it'll be pleasant and a lot warmer than the UK!

Not Spain, but did a 4 month rental in Antigua via AirBnB 2 years back. No hassle. so I'd look there first.

The trouble with AirBnB is that you cannot haggle and you pay up front for a property you have only seen a few choice photos. Location is important for long-term rental.

If you visit and identify a suitable property and sit in front of an agent offering good income for his client, he will listen.

You can haggle.

If you see a property you like it's always possible to contact the host and suggest a deal done away from AirBNB.
We do this for some of our regulars.

You missed my point about location being important. If anything will do then

AirBnB go out of their way to disrupt direct contact. For the Balearics, Canaries, or mainland Spain, it is worth paying a visit beforehand if you are thinking of spending 3-months at a location. A beach holiday 10k from the coast, or a golfing holiday 10k from the nearest restaurant are likely to be unsatisfactory. When people are selling, the truth tends to get stretched - a lot. Kitchens and bathrooms can be very cold in winter months.

I agree that peak season in Antigua overcomes many drawbacks, bar thrift.

This point is very valid. You do need to do your research. Location is key. You will see a lot of places advertised in Spain, that look & are great, but you will have to have a car. Little picturesque villages are great 6 months of the year, the other 6 months they are dead. The Costa del Sol is not t-shirts & shorts all year round & unless your place has heating you will get cold. I do have a place between Marbella & Gib so can speak from experience.

Antigua was relatively thrifty as I booked with CV19 still causing havoc with travel!
