Lady Balfour has asked me for birthday present ideas.

I have to do some travelling later this year, which I intend to do with hand luggage only if at all possible. Any ideas for travel bits and bobs to make travelling light easier?

My starting point would be "right sized luggage". A good but small roll on suitcase that meets all the regs for carry on, then a medium sized rucksack that can go under the seat if need be.

Assuming you have a phone / headset for listening to music, after that the most convenient things for me are small toiletries bottles etc etc ... really light travel if you are happy to use whatever the hotel has on offer for washing.

The only other thing I'd consider is "crease proof clothing" but given you can usually hang stuff up near a hot shower and the creases fall out I don't bother.

Slip on shoes for going through security biggrin

I'd agree on bags. I've recently got a RAB branded expedition duffel that is carry-on sized (wider than it is tall) rather than being cylindrical like the North Face ones.

Noise cancelling headphones are good, need to get a new set after my previous ones broke. I had battery powered ones so no faffing about with charging or having enough power for long flights.

Going where?
Near? Far?
I'm good with a 35 litre rucksack that fits under the seats in front, suitably packed with T-shirts and shorts and some electrical adaptors.
I don't take a rigid case because I can use the rucksack to go to the beach when I'm there.

Craghopper Kiwi shirts are ideal for travel. Dry easily, don’t need to be ironed and have security pockets.

It's business travel. I don't plan to wrestle crocodiles.

If we're talking business trips that are just a couple of nights away from home at a time I've found a wheeled 'pilot case' style bag is the best. Although smaller than many carry on sizes it's not too big for any - and will also fit into an overhead locker stood up so easier to find a gap. They also tend to give you more usable space than many traditional suitcase carry on bags - and are much easier to carry around/up and down stairs/etc than traditional ones as once lifted the bottom is well clear of the ground, not catching on every step.

Combine that with a seperate laptop bag that has 'band' to let you slip it down over the pilot case extendeing handle and you can easilly take; 2 laptops, Kindle, set of casual clothes (inc. shoes), couple of rolled shirts, changes of underwear, wash bag, and liquids bag for 3 or 4 nights away.

And if you want a really cheap business traveller gift - a good quality, zipped liquids bag and some refillable shampoo/shower gell bottles with built in suckers.

The former are available from most supermarkets (filled with Nivea or similar products you can just bin) and make airport security much easier as you can just grab/plonk in try/grab/shove back in bag. None of the fannying around with a little plastic bag that lasts about 1.5 flights and everything is constantly trying to fall out of.

The latter are also available from supermarkets - or at least one shop in every departures hall I've ever graced.

So are you only going to wear business shirts the whole time?

I was kidding obviously but when not in formal shirt and jacket I will be in something like a decent quality polo and chinos or shorts.
