Hi, I live in Charleston so happy to help. Been here 19 years. What time of year are you visiting?

As for other places, I wouldn't recommend Myrtle Beach, aka the Redneck Riviera. Wilmington is a nice little town though.

Asheville in the mountains is popular, about a 4 hr drive from Charleston.

There is the BMW factory near Spartanburg SC. I think they still do tours of the production facility and there is a small BMW museum and performance driving school there.

A little further away back into Georgia is Road Atlanta race track.

Just outside Savannah is Roebling Road racetrack. There is also the Mighty Eighth aircraft museum just outside Savannah.

Savannah to Charleston is about a 2 hour drive.

As for Charleston, feel free to PM me with anything very specific. As for wildlife, there is a Birds Of Prey Centre just outside Charleston. There is an aquarium downtown. Where are you staying in Charleston? A local company called Coastal Expeditions do several local tours. I have used them before, the last one being a boat trip out to Bulls Island. The carriage rides downtown are actually ok and a different way to see the city. Its quite regulated on routes etc so all the companies are much of the same.

There are the plantation houses, but they aren't a patch on National Trust homes for the most part.

www.charlestoncitypaper.com is a source of what's going on in town from events to music etc.

For car related things there are two regular cars and coffee events. Charleston Cars and Coffee in Mt Pleasant every Saturday from about 8-10.30am in Town Centre shopping mall. Then monthly there is Ale and Octane on Daniel Island. 3rd Sunday I think, 12-3pm.

I believe there is a free trolley bus on Saturdays from 1-9pm that is run by some local breweries, taking free rides to their breweries. You might have to google this. Most of the breweries are in a more industrial part of town.

As for restaurants, take your pick. Many of the popular ones get booked up weeks in advance and walk-ins may leave you a long wait or disappointed. I'd be happy to help you out on options if you want to PM me.

A few years ago we did a 2 week road-trip starting/ending in Washington DC (great museums) then heading south.

We went to Myrtle Beach, Charleston, Savannah and Asheville.

As has been said avoid Myrtle Beach, nothing open in winter and downmarket/rammed in summer.

Charleston was lovely, but we felt Savannah was even prettier. Asheville was interesting though much smaller and if you go visit the Biltmore Estate, home of the Vanderbilts.

Having done this exact roadtrip last year, except doing 1 night in each city driving from Tampa I would recommend the Francis Marion hotel in Charleston, very centrally located in the "historic" district in Charleston, only a 10 or so minute walk to the City Market, Waterfront Pier park which has great views over to Patriots Point and across the Cooper river. Rainbow row not too far either, if you're into your military museums I would highly recommend Patriots Point, I think I spent 3-4 hours just on the WW2 era USS Yorktown itself and still didn't see everything, with the destroyer the USS Laffey moored right next to it.

If you want even better views, you can park by the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, walk up and have amazing views either towards Charleston or towards Mount Pleasant/Patriots point.

I see you've got accommodation in Savannah already but if you hadn't, I would have recommended The Marshall House, another historic inn type hotel which has kept a lot of it's 19th century architecture, there's even a wine evening and lecture in the main room by the reception in the evening. Food wise in Savannah I would 100% recommend a place called 'The Pirates House', some of the best traditional southern food you'll get, try the pecan fried chicken. Also if it's something you're into, the Owen Thomas House and Slave Quarters is a quick but interesting look into a typical state home that housed slaves back in the day.

There's also a shed load of little park squares, including the one where Forrest Gump was filmed and a 18th century cemetery around the corner from the Owen Thomas house, Forsyth Park is a good visit too. Both Savannah and Charleston are very walkable, leave the car with the valets and explore on foot.

Just back from a trip from DC through the Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway to Asheville. Then on to Savanna then Charleston (just south on Seabrook Island) and back to DC via Greensboro in NC.

I’m posting this now so I can remember to respond in more detail later.
