We are off to the Italian GP on a couple of weeks, but we are there from Wednesday night til Monday evening so will get to have a couple of days doing daytime touristing and hopefully a few evenings for some nice food and drinks.

Where is the best area/s to go for nice but fairly sensibly priced (if thats even possible) food and drinks in Milan of an evening?

Also, what specific touristy things would you recommend?

We are stopping in the Turro district if that helps, which by the looks of it is right on one of the metro stops to central milan.

Cheers

Como is only 1 hr on the train, the stop is Varenna Esino and it's roughly 8euro each way. Its a great day out.

In Milan itself we loved the bars along the canal at Navigli for both drinks and bar food (italian style). This was amazingly cheap too.

The hop on hop off bus tours are obviously an option to see most things.

Volandia is an aeroplane museum west of the city ,it also has the Bertone collection housed in it .

I would also go to the Alfa Romeo museum at Arese ,in my opinion the best car museum in Italy ,far bigger and better than Ferrari and Lamborghini places .

Not been to Volandia before but have been to Alfa before .

Cheers both I don’t think I can convince the other half to do cars planes etc on top of F1 hehe

But the Navigli area looks good but is the opposite side of the city but looks like everything is at least 30 minutes metro away from our hotel so may have to crack on

+1 for a day trip to Como, it’s absolutely beautiful. Be sure to make a day of it and use the lake ferries to get about.

I love Milan I think it’s a great city to wander around and to sit and people watch.

Hmm. Personally I find Milan to be an absolute dump and heartily dislike the place. The Alfa museum is certainly worth going to, but don’t try and order a new one from the shop there - they won’t bother to notice you. Even if you turned up in one and let them know you would be interested in ordering a new one!
Anyway, Navigli is a decent bit down by the canal, stayed there frequently for work.
The centre is dull as hell, the shopping bit looks like most other city shopping bits and don’t visit La Scala hoping to be impressed - you won’t. Was grimy, dingy and dirty last time I looked.
Are flying into Linate or Malpensa? Try not to get run over crossing the car park exit road when getting across to the hire car pick up.

We are flying into Malpensa - hopefully should be ok we have a private transfer.

I don’t think we are going to have a massive amount of time to go deep into Milan, we will basically get a day and a half as will be at Monza Friday to Sunday

Malpensa is a bit of a slep into central Milan, if you saying north of centre though it may not be too long.

If you go to the Duomo, there is an Aperol bar with a terrace that quite pleasant for a couple of drinks overlooking the square. Best to book that in advance though.

Darsena is good for eating and drinking but can be busy and pricey. We liked the BQ bar - craft ales although I’m not sure the Darsena one is still open although they have a few- and FUD- an Italian take on fast food but much better.

Cheers we are stopping in Turro which is right by a Metro station that goes straight to Duomo - supposedly only 15 minutes.

That bar doesn't have an auto booking form so I may have to use Google translate's best italian to email them hehe

Be very aware of pick pockets on the Metro. If anyone (typically female with a couple of kids) asks the way to a particular station, that’s typical with someone dipping into purse.

Yes I’ve bought extra pairs of shorts with zipped pockets to help prevent this kind of thing hehe

Hello,

Long time lurker, first time poster...

I lived many in years in Brianza (the region of Monza) and in Milan itself. I have been to countless races and trackdays there, including F1, WEC, etc.

In Milan I can recommend the following:

- For pizza, Da Zero on Luini street. Staff is very friendly and they have menu in English. Book a table in advance:
(SHAIT!, the forum doesn't allow me to put links, Search "Da Zero Luini" on Google Maps.

- For a traditional gelato, try Bastianello. It's also a bar, coffee shop, etc.:
Bastianello Via Borgogna.

- For a more innovative gelato, try Casa Infante:
Casa Infante Via Torino.

- Other great gelaterie includes Artico, Il Massimo del Gelato, Crema, etc. (check on Google maps which ones you are willing to walk to).

- At the Galleria, all restaurants are tourist traps, with the exception of Gracco (Michelin star - $$$$). There you also have the Camparino and Terrazza Aperol bars. The first in particular have a very nice atmosphere.

- Are you into wine? At Signorvino (many locations) you have a good selection of bottles at very reasonable prices, plus nice tagliere (portions of prosciutto, cheese, bread, etc.) to go with it. Booking a table in advance is also recommended:

- If you plan a day trip to Lake Como, I recommend the following:
1) Take the metro at Turro to Sesto 1 Maggio (Sesto San Giovanni).
2) From Sesto, take a train to Lecco (check TRENORD website for the timetable)
3) In Lecco, you can take the boat to Varenna.
4) Stroll around Varenna, enjoy its nice views, and then take a boat to Bellagio.
5) Enjoy Bellagio and return by taking the FAST boat to Como. I highly recommend that you don't leave Bellagio after 18:00 otherwise you risk not getting a place on the boat, particularly if the weather is bad for navigation.
6) Check Como around and then take your train back to Sesto San Giovanni.
7) Take the metro to Turro.

Anyway, let me know if you have any questions.

By the way, why have chosen Turro? It's not a particularly interesting neighborhood. Nothing bad about it but also not a beautiful place either.

In regards to safety, Milan used to be a very good city until recently, unfortunately nowadays a bit of caution is necessary:
1) Pickpockets are either young gipsy girls or older gipsy women with children. They stay close to you while you are distracted and open your bag, pick your phone, etc.
2) DO NOT allow those black guys offering bracelets to put one on your wrist.
3) Keep an eye 100% of the time on your bags while on the metro & train.
4) AVOID the Milan central station (Centrale) area at night.

I hope it helps. Enjoy the Gran Prix!

I also like the Alfa Romeo museum, but the Casa Enzo Ferrari in Modena has so much interesting stuff and is always adding new things.

The best car museum in Italy, in my opinion, is the Museo Nazionale dell'Automobile in Turin.

Interesting point of view...

I think Milan may be a bit ugly outside the historical center, with the exception of the new business districts such as Porta Nuona and City Life (Tre Torri). I don't understand why you think it's an "absolute dump" since it has some great historical sights, parks, and great restaurants.

Malpensa to Turro is relatively easy and cheap by public transportation: Express train from Malpensa staion to Cadorna station, then metro from Cadorna to Turro.

The cafe Marchesi 1824 is right in the center of the Galleria, upstairs. We thought for location very reasonable, 10euro for 2 coffees and pastries.

Ops, I forgot Marchesi, it's a Milanese institution, definitely recommend.

Thanks for that - some food for thought (pun intended!).

We didn't choose the hotel, it came as part of the package for the GP by the Travel company. We also have transfers to/from the airport included and to/from the circuit Saturday and Sunday, but need to make our own way there Friday. Looks simple enough though to get to the circuit via train.

Seems like you have a good plan.

A nice walk you can do to see some of Milan's landmarks is to start at the Duomo and finish at Arco della Pace. If you put it on Google Maps, it will guide you through the Castello Sforzesco and then the Sempione Park.

There is very good bookstore just about motorsports and cars called Libreria dell'Automobile (Corso Venezia, 45), which is right by the side of the Automobile Club Milano (sometimes they have free-admission expositions there). From there you can walk to Via Monte Napoleone, the heart of the fashion district.

If you are into modern architecture, go to Piazza Gae Aulenti (Porta Garibaldi metro station). Nearby you have the Corso Como, a street full of bars and restaurants, the EATALY shop, and far ahead the Corso Garibaldi (even better selection of bars and restaurants).

There are also many other cathedrals worth visiting other than the Duomo.

Anyway, I hope it helps. Let me know if you have in mind something in particular. Enjoy the race!
