Beach resort near Rome
Discussion
Anzio is nice as is Nettuno next door but if you want a nice beach you might need to go further away.
Going further south you have Sabaudia and San Felice Circeo. Sabaudia is quirky as it was a new town built in the 20s and it is a great example of rationalism. San Felice is halfway up the Circeo mountain and also very nice. Both are around 1.5h away using an A road.
If you want to go north of Rome you could consider Fregene or Tarquinia. Both are just off the A12 motorway.
As an alternative, there are also a couple of nice lakes around Rome, Lago di Albano and Lago di Bracciano. The first one is where the Pope goes on holiday (in the town of Castelgandolfo) while if you like airplanes, the Italian AF museum is by Bracciano.
Finally, the closest beach to Rome itself is Ostia. It is not particularly nice but it can be reached easily with public transport.

For reasons of speed of access to the airport I am tempted to stay Anzio / Nettuno and travel to see some other stuff.

Never found a decent Italian beach in summer. Their beaches would put the Germans to shame with the efficiency of putting a million sun loungers perfectly lined up into a small space and then charging like rhinos. Love Italy but would never base a beach holiday there.
Obligatory over the top photo
Try Tropea. Not horrendous for a beach holiday, superb seafood at the top of the beach and a lovely place.Obligatory over the top photo
But I recall being somewhere in Italy and asking how much the front loungers on the beach were, I thought they were joking. It was in 4 figures.

Your looking on the wrong side of Italy, all the Romans go to the adriatic coast, mostly in Abruzzo or Le Marche. Fly to Ancona or Pescara and base yourself out of one of the main cities down the coast, my favourite is San Benedetto del Toronto. Its where the italians holiday and very reasonable with decent beaches.

There are reasons why we want the west side, in part that we have been to the east quite a lot. However, last night I booked Sanremo. So it's sorted. Many thanks chaps.
