Hi

My family and I are traveling out to Greece at the weekend, the UK media is doing it's best as usual to put the fear into us. But looking at the weather apps they all seem to concur with day time temps of around 43-47c!

Then there are forest fires, I understand these to be controlled on the island we visit.

Is it a nightmare 24/7 or does it get more civilized in the evenings? I looked at a few webcams and can see people enjoying life so I hope it is like that. I do struggle when the temp goes much above 30c but humidity will also have an impact.

Anyone been to Cyprus/Turkey/Greece or nearby this week?

Thanks

Travelling to Turkey tomorrow evening for 10 days, looking forward to it, it's a bit warm but that's what we want.

I think it's the current climate change agenda; scare people!

The end of the world is nigh! Seem to recall similar in the 70's and ever since.

Back from Cyprus in the early hours of this morning. I assume much of the heatwave missed the island as temperature were not abnormal for the time of year. Nevertheless, it was circa 35 degrees C all week and really bloody hot. I barely left the pool and otherwise sought shade.

I’m sorry to say that I can’t imagine coping well at the sort of temperatures being reported by parts of Italy, Greece and Spain. I guess t somewhat depends on what sort of holiday you’re hoping for.

There isn't an "agenda" anyone thinking such is utterly deluded or into self-delusion.

But obviously, that does not detract from the appalling heat, weather issues etc.... so any feedback on that would be helpful as we travel with pregnant and elderly family members.

OP, I'm in Kefalonia at the moment, it is very warm (around 38-40c in the shade the last few days) and, yes, there is a heatwave across most of Greece. The worst of the fires are on the mainland. There's always fires this time of year, but mostly contained. I'm not sure where you're holidaying, but if it's one of the islands then I'm sure you'll be ok. As usual, a lot of media driven hysteria...

What we have now is wall-to-wall media. It was warmer during Roman times, but they didn’t have telly or the tinternet. So it doesn’t count.

These temps are too hot for me, but then I don’t attempt to go to these areas at this time of year, precisely because it’s the same every year.

We got back from the Algarve yesterday - on the weather map it was shown as bright red with charred black crispy bits the whole week, but in real life it was 31 max, a breeze, 21 in the evenings.
We’re all doomed etc.

It does tend to be hot in Greece in July/August and whilst it “might” be a little hotter than usual (nothing they haven’t had before) there is shade, sea, pools and air con.
My two sons have just come back from Crete and Croatia and whist it was hot, not really out of the ordinary.
I’ve been in Turkey when it was 43 degrees (measured there, not on some scaremonger MSM) 35 years ago and it was fine.
There are also wildfires every year in Greece and despite what the media say, they are definitely not started by the weather being hot.
Just go and enjoy it!!

Just back from 11 nights in Croatia, it never dropped below 28 degrees and got as high as 34, spent most of my daytime hours around water. I would think that elderly and pregnant would find it tough going. My neighbours daughter was in Corfu at the same time and she said on some days it hit 40, Southern Europe is definitely experiencing some odd weather, reports of Sicily reaching 45 degrees and citizens of Seville being told to stay indoors between 11 am and 20.00 pm. Watch out!!

We're in Lourdas at the moment it's hot hot hot basically peak August temps although it's pretty nice when the sun goes down. Argostoli in the morning for our regular visit to the turtles and we'll be retreating to the pool!

I think you should cancel especially as you have pregnant and elderly family members, besides which you are only adding to the problem by flying - you really ought to do the right thing.

Currently in Italy; recent temps in Florence and Venice have been significantly below what the media is saying. 32 to 37 rather than >40. It’s been hot, but not so hot as to be unbearable.

Quite honestly I'd be cancelling that. In Kefalonia at the moment we've seen only 38/39 really this week but somehow it feels warmer. It's too hot even to eat out. We are sat out now at half 9 it's over 30 with no breeze any slight bodily movement you're drenched. We have alternated between pool and sea all week it's the only way to survive!

We're booked for August again here in a hotel and looking at cancelling or moving it to a villa which is what we've done this week.

On Rhodes at the moment. Hotel reception forecast says highs of 43/45 next day or so but v strong wind takes the edge of the heat. It’s warm but ok as long as one is sensible -bit of windsurfing tomorrow !

Taking the pregnant and elderly into 43-47C heat ? Sorry, what were you saying about people being utterly deluded again? rolleyes Trying engaging your brain (if you have one, which looks doubtful).
This was booked months ago and we have all discussed this at length this week.
When you discussed it did you include a medical professional with a view on the elderly person and the pregnant woman ?

I would seriously bin it off it's a few k vs health. As much as I love holidays this one has been a bit much really missed out on having meals our and stuff it's just too hot to sit anywhere that's not for AC dialed up to 11 and in Greece it's all about the Taverna st outside. It's just too hot to do it this time maybe after sunset but not practical with 3 kids.

I see on Rhodes they have a few hotels burnt down it's crazy! There was a decent fire here in Kefalonia last week. They do a good job keeping an eye out though there are literally firefighters on 24 hour guard all over the island.
