Just a heads up for anyone with a French holiday home - I was stoppped by French customs at the tunnel on the Folkstone side. They had a quick search of the vehicle, I was carrying a couple of bikes, clothes, personal stuff. Once they had established that I was travelling to a French "residence secondaire" they told me that everything I was carrying was subject to import taxes and VAT.

Apparently I need to provide two copies of an inventory of all the goods I was transporting, along with valuations, and a customs declaration. This would then be subject to VAT and import taxes (after personal allowances). They told me that this was all the fault of Brexit.

On this occasion they said they would turn a blind eye, and let me go without any penalties.

Just a heads up for anyone else headed out this summer.

Did they think you were going to leave that stuff there (eg import?)

Don't know what you would call this sort of action?
Sour grapes over our Brexit Decision!
For the French this sort of directive only comes down from the top to send a message to the Brits.
All I can say what goes around comes around.
The US does this every couple of years until they realise that they are hurting their Tourism Dollars and then they go on a charm offensive to draw in the tourists.

How dare they treat us like any other non-member of the EU...

Indeed, taking back control of borders is part of the sunlit uplands isn't it?

Anything you are leaving at your holiday home you would need to pay import taxes on, anything you are bringing back would just need a Carnet (excludes personal possesions, clothes etc) but if they fall into household goods it can be a real ballache to try and prove they are coming back with you.

Personal items and belongings for use on your holiday obviously won’t attract any tax or duty.

Were you in a van?

Catching up with the Spanish who have been quite hot on this for a while.

Towing a boat doesn't seem to cause any attention at the tunnel, whereas Santander / Bilbao results in forms & requirement for proof of it leaving at the end of your holiday.

If you are in a van then you are transporting goods.
Private car is personal possessions to be used on holiday
I’ve been though a few times since Brexit with bikes and other goods no problems at all.

Yeah but it has stopped the flow illegal immigrants and seen the biggest increase in GDP 20 years as we now sell to the rest of the world with improved trade deals.

Pickup truck. I've done this journey 10+ times since Brexit, first time it's been an issue.

I did tell them it was just stuff for a holiday. But they said I still needed an inventory and declaration.

We, the UK, left the EU Customs Union. It was our choice. Therefore, we became subject to Customs procedures and charges when crossing into the EU.

None of this should be news to you, and none of it is anyone's "fault", apart from anyone who voted for Brexit, and the subsequent moronic UK government who chose to implement it in such as way as to take us out of the Customs Union. Taking back control of our borders, wasn't it? Well there we go, this is what controlling borders means without Customs agreements in place - it works both ways.

What did you expect? A waiver because of D-Day or something?

These attempts to paint the French and the EU as intransigent and obstructive are just plain idiocy. What goes around, comes around indeed. We span the wheel and now it's firing excrement in our faces.

I honestly can't understand how it is people come to think this way.

I wonder how they'll deal with all the dog food we take, which we don't bring back...

And the tools I bought in France, took back to England (unhindered) and am now taking back to France.

Well to start with I hope it's all vegetarian dog food, otherwise you've already breached the Products of Animal Origin regs. by taking it into the country.

Seriously? Threatening holidaymakers about going on holiday with holiday stuff sounds pretty much exactly like intransigence and obstructiveness.

Happening on both side unfortunately.
