Looking for some advice for a citybreak to Oxford later this year.

Will be taking mrs bergs there for a special anniversary.

The city has many fond memories for us - but not having beer there for some 15 odd years, at a loss to think of a nice, charactersome place to stay…

Ideally - wanna be city centre or certainly within reasonable yomping distance…

Pub with rooms would be ideal

Any recommendations?

Cheers guys,

Bergs

To stay walking distance from the city centre either of these would be excellent choices. The Old Parsonage also does a nice afternoon tea. Both have car parking too.

A few other points of interest ..

The Westgate shopping centre has been renovated within the last few years - cinema, decent shops, rooftop restaurants. The old Radcliffe Infirmary site has also been developed. They are university buildings now, but some good architecture if you walk along Walton Street into Jericho (Some nice pubs around there too).

Much of the city centre is pedestrianised or one way traffic. Using Waze should avoid potential fines.

For a traditional breakfast unfortunately St. Giles Cafe is long gone, but there is still Brown's in the Covered Market. Alternatively the Handlebar Cafe is good. For a quick takeaway baguette or panini Taylor's is great.

I think the Oxford Malmaison is an old prison

Checked - it is. Its go character. haven't stayed there but have been recommended it.

I know a few people who have stayed and enjoyed it, location is near the centre and the Westgate rooftop bars.

The 2 simplest answers are: Malmaison or the Head of the River.
Voco is about 300m further up the road back to the Park n Ride, but twice the price. Upside - it has parking.

I, personally, would stay in the Head of the River and park at Westgate around the corner. In fact I have done fairly often.

I think I’ve stayed in almost every single establishment from Oxford down to Newbury over the last 6yrs due to work/life. Most of them multiple times.
