We are off to Malta (St Pauls Bay) Aug / Sept. What are the must go to places that we should visit, we both love a bit of history ? Also between you lot and me, there is quite a classic car (Ford) thing in Malta, does anyone know of any events between Aug 28 / Sept 7 that we could accidentally come across ?
Also any tips ref Malta would be much appreciated.

Just found this about 200yds behind the hotel https://www.classiccarsmalta.com/
I can't talk highly enough about this place:
https://www.stjohnscocathedral.com/
and there is a brilliant little espresso bar across the road, down the road a bit, opposite the outdoor restaurant seating.
How about this:
https://heritagemalta.mt/explore/st-pauls-catacomb...
And there is of course the ferry to Gozo. If you are short on time, i'd be tempted to give Gozo a miss. I'm not a big fan of Ggantija - it's a bit meh.
The best thing we did in Malta was the Catamaran tour, i cannot remember the name of the company, there is a large net at the front of the boat and it is semi party'ish.

In terms of history, it’s got to be Mdina although it’s one of the least PH places in the world due to cars being banned.
In terms of scenery, I was very impressed with the little island of Comino between Malta and Gozo. Wild and natural coastal walks around its coast and we swum in beautiful blue waters.

There's a heritage walk in the hills above Xemxija with lots of interesting historical sites. It's just an area you can walk though - there's no visitor centre.
A couple of places to eat that I liked were Ta' Bertus' kitchen (traditional Maltese food) and Fins & Gills Fish And Chips (which is essentially a take away - but you can eat outside - very fresh fish and perfectly cooked). Both are on the western edge of St Pauls Bay.

It was a few years ago now, but we hired a small boat with an outboard on Malta close to Comino and had a great time. We "dropped anchor" on the Blue Lagoon and had lunch and a swim, then went round the island on the way back to Malta. It was fantastic, and highly recommended.I hope it’s a bit cooler when you go, than it was last week while we were there!
I would get an “explore” ticket for the buses. It lasts seven days and costs 21 euros. Works out at about £3 a day. Amazing value and all the buses have air con, which was essential when we were there.
If you get the app as well, you will be able to tell the times and destinations before you get to the bus stop.
Things we found interesting were: Ghar Dalam and Magar Qim ( archaeology sites)
Also, Valletta, Mdina, st Johns co-cathedral, Gozo, harbour cruise, Gozo ferry and the fast ferry.
There are open top tourist buses as well, where you can hop on and off where you like. Price was about 23 euros for the day. There are two routes. Red for the south of the island and blue for the north.
Hope you have a good time.

Yeah if you're going comino hire your own little speed boat for a few hours from http://www.ohyeahmalta.com/?gclid=CjwKCAjwh8mlBhB_... in mellieha bay and drive yourself over there. The main bit where the tourist boat drops you off is like Ibiza on school holidays but it's lovely to buzz over to and swim around the lagoons on your own boat.
Again, Mdina is great for lunch.
Marsaxlokk Sunday open market with the pretty boats is a must, some places will do you a bus ride there on the old original Malta busses. Buy a tuna ftira from the cafe thing there, there's proper restaurants there too.
St Julian's bay at night, beautiful harbour, Fri or Saturday night.
I'll think of more.
Cannons are fired noon and 4pm Monday to Saturday at Valletta. Good touristy shopping there.
Love Malta, best place in the med.

Was a good outside dinner last time we went, they light the church up at night.
Mosta Dome was a good little visit.

Been to Malta many times as a kid/teenager, I took my 11 month old baby a few weeks ago for his first holiday.
If your interested in old vehicles at all, Malta used to have a heritage bus fleet running everyday, they are no longer now, they use modern busses. But some of the old buses run between Mdina and St Julians via Valleta.

I used to have a villa in Mellieha and know the island very well.
It is only Twenty miles from end to end, so there's lots packed into a small space.
Nearly everything can be found on You Tube or Google.......my recommendations
Mdina (Pronounced Imdina)
Fort Rinella (Armstrong giant gun) near Kalkara
Best beaches Mellieha and nearby Golden Bay
The Red Tower
Day trip to Gozo (Half hour ferry)
Car Museum, Buggiba
T'Quali craft village
WW2 War Museum Valletta
Republic Street Valletta plus stunning Grand harbour views from Upper Barrakka Gardens
Blue Grotto
If you like nightlife, St Julians, but it can get very noisy and busy in Summer
Hiring a small car is a must, unfortunately. if you are expecting to see all the old yellow 1950's buses you will be disappointed as most of them have gone, to be replaced by modern ones.
Maltese folk are very friendly. 99% speak perfect English, and they drive on the same side of the road as the UK.

That museum is great. I couldn't believe how many cars are crammed in there, and how much they all must be worth. If you're staying in Bugibba there are some very nice places to eat that I can recommend:
https://www.dolmen.com.mt/en/restaurants-bars/carv... for very nice steaks. Quite expensive but very nice.
https://ninelivesmalta.com/ is right on the beach and is a very nice little bar\restaurant
https://vecchianapoli.com/ does superb pizza
And if you want a taste of the 'real' Malta I can very much recommend a restaurant in the little hamlet we stay in which is just across the bay from Bugibba which is https://www.tacassia.com/en/home.htm

They do run a heritage route between Mdina and St Julians now and also the fishing market on Sundays. I rode a Thames with bonnet a few weeks ago, Bedford with bonnet is also regular on that route.
Wow!!!
Many thanks for all the reply's folks, so many places to take our pick from.
We are staying at the Dolman in Bugibba. Mrs Marky is not going to believe that by chance there is a car museum so close but i shall leave her by the pool when i pay it a visit.
We will probably hire a small car for a few days so we can whiz around to see a few of the suggestions.
