Egypt... your experience
Discussion
Although I've not been to Cairo etc, I've done a few AI resort holidays there and ventured into towns, local excursions etc.
I'd just say do your homework before you go as people are trying to rip you off at every corner which is the main thing I found off putting, apart from that it's still a nice place.
A lot of info/recommendations on the TripAdvisor forums, so I'd have a search on there before you go.

I got offered 8 camels for a night with the ex wife. Wish I'd taken them now!
Sounds like you still got the hump....badum tish.Forgot to add, you need to pay for a visa at the airport but make sure you buy these from the bank desks in the terminal as it's a set price, not from the kiosks that have tour operator signs.

Amazing place, shame about the people.
Be prepared for begging at all times…. but the place is fabulous.
It’s hassle all the time. Begins as you walk out of the terminal, a guy almost grabs your bag. Kids are always by your side with their hands out.Be prepared for begging at all times…. but the place is fabulous.
Then at the Valley of the Kings it’s like a war zone with security guys with big sticks throwing beggars out. At the toilet block there was a guy at the door with toilet paper. £1 a sheet, or should it be £1 a st.

They offer an e-visa now, which makes things a bit easier https://www.visa2egypt.gov.eg/eVisa/Homesmifffymoto said:
Bloody hell,it sounds just like Marracech(where I thought it was a st hole)
Do the pyramids, ancient history and the like not make up for the st stuff or does it just spoil the experience?
Ive done Marrakesh a few times on golf breaks (stay in the palmerie, Brazilian nightclub place and Nikki Beach)... we ventured to the centre once (at night, a few in the day).. You'll need to appreciate the history or have a bloody good tour guide/Egyptologist.Do the pyramids, ancient history and the like not make up for the st stuff or does it just spoil the experience?
If you can get your head around the history & timescales involved the place will quite literally blow your mind.
I have been many times on business & pleasure.
Cairo is wonderful chaos, noise & smells. How anyone can not be impressed looking at Saqarra & the step pyramid which is around 5000yrs old is beyond me. The "pyramids" themselves are amazing, but yes all the pictures point away from Cairo into the desert. Taken from the other side things are different. The Egyptian museum is a must do. as is the Mosque of Muhammad Ali. The Tutankamen room is full of beautiful art. Feeling adventurous go down to the Khan el-Khalili which is the old bazaar area.
Luxor down to Aswan is a mass of ancient monuments. Luxor & Karnak temples, Esna, Edfu, Hatsheptsut. Not forgeting Valley of the Kings.
Head east & you have the Red Sea & possibly some of the best diving in the world.
If you can't get your head round the history & focus on what frankly is a minor bit of harassment you'll hate the place. The harassment by the way is easily solved.

One of the YouTube travel bloggers (can't remember which one at the moment) rated it as one of the worst places to visit.
Loads of corruption, loads of hassle, lots of underwhelming tourist attractions.
I haven't been but get the impression it's the kind of place you go where you don't bother leaving the confines of your AI hotel and just enjoy the virtually guaranteed weather.

There’ll be more than one. And I probably have seen it, here’s an example:Loads of corruption, loads of hassle, lots of underwhelming tourist attractions.

I kind of agree with this; the historical monuments, and the views down the Nile are stunning. However, there can be a bit of hassle, and the ever present squits..I have been many times on business & pleasure.
