Hoi An where to stay and where to go ?
Discussion
Hoi An and Da Nang are two very different place, the former being a bit picture postcard and relatively small and the latter being a working city and much larger. I do however, like both in equal measure.
The beaches in Hoi An are a fair schlep from the town itself, but very picturesque, whereas Da Nang you can stay right on the beach, but still within easy access of the restaurants/shopping/nightlife etc.
Restaurant wise De Nang has more choice, especially for local cuisine as the city has younger and more affluent demographic, think coffee shops and cafés, but with only 6 days you won’t run out of options in Hoi an either.
I would say there is more to do and see in Da Nang, although Hoi an is more historic, Da Nang just has a more local feel. Nearby you have the Hai Van Pass (Top Gear Vietnam special) easy to reach by hire car of motorcycle, absolutely stunning views.
Hotels, I don’t think my suggestions would cut it, Mrs. DG and I go for extended periods, so price is of the essence, basically you can get somewhere decent from £20 to whatever you would like to spend.
Notes Tet Vietnamese New Year, start on 08/02/24 to 16/02/24 most places will be closed, some places the holiday lasts longer. If planning to drive, get an international licence, the hire companies couldn’t’ give a monkey’s but local plod might.
This one looks good and good price, 7 minutes walk to airport https://www.booking.com/hotel/vn/la-maison-des-del...
I can recommend staying away from the green pineapple bar near the market. My sister in law was given a heathy measure of methanol in place of an ordered Gin. She said it tasted awful . when i complained they just slugged their shoulders and came with a genuine gin, it seems a game they play give you badly made hootch and if you don't complain they have won only methanol is poisonous but from there attitude they would do it again.
We stayed in the TIA wellness resort in Denang last year and it was beautiful. Private pool and right on the beach, and had a free shuttle bus service to Hoi An twice a day as well as wonderful complimentary massage every day:-

We stayed in Da Nang for 2 weeks back in May and absolutely fell in love with the place. Lots to do, plenty of decent bars and restaurants, cheap and the locals were incredibly friendly. We were a bit apprehensive after our trip to Bangkok a few years ago and the joys of Bangkok taxi drivers but we needn't have worried - we'd go back in a heartbeat.
We decided to do a day trip up to Hoi An and had our own personal taxi driver/guide for the day. He took us to the coconut Boats (which were highly amusing, but you will end up with Gangnam Style as an earworm) then on into Hoi An centre, then waited for us as we had some dinner then took us back to Da Nang - total cost for the taxi was about 900k Dong including tip, so about 35 quid at the time. He was texting me for the rest of the holiday seeing if we needed a lift, so if you want his number let me know
We stayed in Haian Beach Hotel for the first few days, which was nice but being on the main drag the traffic noise (the horns!) carried on through the night - less of an issue if you went to the beach party which carried on until 6am Then we moved to a proper beach hotel on the other side of the bay which was lovely - private pool and you could walk straight from your room to the beach for about £100 a night. Don't recall the name but can ask the wife. We needed to get a taxi into Da Nang each night but our new best friend duly obliged, and it didn't cost us much at all.
