Hi Folks,

Looking for some help on places to visit at the end of September. Normally head to Devon & Cornwall but never been to Suffolk before. It will only be the OH and myself, plus our two dogs.

I have been recommended Aldeburgh & Southwold and areas to focus on as it will give good options to walk the dogs and places to visit.

Any recommendations from PH?

Thanks

Just got back last week
Stayed just outside Woodbridge, honestly I'd stay towards Woodbridge otherwise there is very little around.

Southwold is ok pier is a 10 minute thing seafront isn't a bad walk down to the river Blyth
Great food at the sole bay fish company

The high street is not great charity shops, sea salt, joules, white stuff and tea rooms and bakery's (two magpies very nice)

Framlingham castle isnt a bad hour or so

Dunwich heath nice place for a walk

Thorpness has the house in the clouds so it's maybe an hours walk around and an ice cream

Snape maltings nice shopping, arts and things

Woodbridge nice shops, good food at the unruly pig, Sutton hoo, the long shed where they are rebuilding the ship from Sutton hoo

Colchester, nice castle the rest of it meh.

Bury st Edmonds. Not a bad town Abbey ruins aren't bad but tie it in with ickworth estate just a few miles away

Ps roads are narrow and if takes ages to get places especially with the a14 roadworks and really thd only other road is the a12

If your interested in military history there’s (was) the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters & RAF Woodbridge occupied by the USAF during the Cold War.

Woodbridge is still MOD, Bentwaters is closed but has a very good, small museum, mostly covering the bases USAF use; with some outside aircraft exhibits – well worth a visit (check opening though): https://www.bcwm.org.uk/

Rendlesham Forest is nearby & has lots of walks including one that references: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rendlesham_Forest_in... which is fun.

There’s also Orford Ness which has a nature reservation (RSPB) and was a weapons testing site pre/post-WWII, fascinating place; you need to get a small boat over as it’s on an island: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orford_Ness

Dunwich Heath’s good for walking (and added bonus of Sizewell B power station).

BTW, depending on where you’re travelling from the A12 has long-term roadworks between Marks Tey & Colchester (both carriageways) – can cause huge tailbacks, especially northbound at the weekend.

Orford's a nice wee place, this would be my choice. Mud flats can be pretty messy with dogs though.

The walk from Walberswick to Southwold is pleasant, couple of decent pubs for lunch too.

Did Parham museum couple of weeks ago and can't recommend it enough for free it's really very good.

If you stay at Darsham the Fox inn does good food.
