Looking for recommendations for Hotel in KL.
Stayed at the Mecure earlier this year but crap location as not much choice in budget when booked
Must be near a train/metro station, central and not above £80 a night also quiet.
Two have caught my eye Elements and Stripes any good? Or any other recommendations.

Stayed at the Kl journal a few years ago, really liked it and great location. Bit more boutique and personable than the standard 4-5* hotels

Having lived in Kl for 27 years, go for location, general rule is you get what you pay for, I always recommend the Istana, but that closed during Covid.
Have a look at the Holiday Inn Express on Raja Chulan, my colleague stays there a lot, covered walk to twin towers, you can walk to China town, Kl tower, and very close to Jalan Alor, Chankit, Pavilion Shoping and a mono rail station.

There aren't that many, to be honest, but the Duke's Head in the main square is pretty good.

You did mean King's Lynn, didn't you?

We stayed at the Hilton which was decent. Not sure about pricing though as we didn't pay.

I'll repeat, locaton, location, location, the Journal is very well located, same area as the Holiday Inn and the Istana I mentioned, obviously all the various Hiltons are good, but none of them are in the right place, unless you enjoy taxis.
Look up the area around the Journal and pick one you like.
80 pound a night is a realistic budget
The journal is about 300yds from where I've lived for the past 20 years and I've never noticed it, just looked and I can see it from my balcony, as its recomended and if the price is right, could be a great buy.

Thanks for the replies, looked at holiday inn and the reviews don’t leave me impressed and for about £25 a night extra can get something much better.
Well aware of location after visiting KL earlier this year so will keep in mind the location you suggested Berw

Yes, I don't claim to be an expert on hotels in kl, I bought my place 20 years ago, as I said my colleague stays at Holiday Inn, but he lives on a construction camp so likes to be able to walk to my place for the wifes cooking. Decide what you want to do or where you need to be and pick something near, dont pick a brand of hotel and try to travel, even by mrt at peak times, covid restictions and masks stll in force on the mrt.
The brand hotels are exctly like and just as good/bad as any you have stayed in elsewhere.
I'm told its worth getting access to the executive floor for the drink, beer is 9 pound a pint now.

I am thinking of a holiday in Malaysia in a few months’ time, with a few days in KL at the start. What’s this 9 quid a pint horror story?! You’ve got me worried! Food and drink in KL was cheap the last time I went there (2015)..?!

Are Covid restrictions and masks still a thing there too?!

Don’t be silly, the OP would have said Lynn if it was Kings Lynn they were talking about.

It’s Kings Langley.

Don’t worry was there earlier this year, food can be found pretty cheap but alcohol being a Muslim country is not as cheap as it’s neighbours more UK prices. Advantage though at the moment is the strengthening exchange rate against Ringit

I’ve always stayed in the Mandarin Oriental. Great location and decently priced particularly when compared to the UK.

Ok trying to reply on the food without going on a rant because its a topic that intersts me.
Beer is 5 pound a pint in happy hour up to say 9pm
You can buy cheaper caned beer at food stalls.
Cheap food is cheap because it is crap, fatty meat, low quality chicken, sugar, salt and msg, look around at the obesity and diabetes. The food ok for a few weeks, but it isn't good for you, I wont eat it and I've lived and worked here for 26 years.
Malay street food is awfull, it is typically cooked elsewhere and stands uncovered sometimes for hours.
Chinese, Thai, Indian food etc is different, and normally cooked in front of you and that's what most people think of as Malaysian food.

On the hotels, I just dont understand going to chain hotels, one of my holiday rules is never book a hotel that HR would book for a business trip, uou don't see a country if you stay at business hotels.

Covid is ok except for the MRT which stll enforce masks.

Thanks for the insight Berw.

Am considering 5 nights at the Journal at the end of July followed by a week in a resort somewhere on the east coast/Terengganu region. It looks like a great recommendation.

Street food is cheap for a reason wherever in the world you are I guess! But I could handle a week of exotic Asian food washed down with a cold one 😀.

For comparison, the street food here in NZ is KFC, Domino’s, Carl’s Junior, etc. Certainly not healthy either!!

The Journal is a great location, it's a few 200 meters from my place, I plan to look in next time I pass.
I wouldn't go to the East Coast. In 26 years I've only been on business, and one wedding, my wife is an Indonesian Muslim she won't go to the East Coast, it so very Islamic, and getting more so.
I assume you are looking at diving, which I can't do because of my Retina, make sure you are happy you have every thing you need at the resort, because there are some bloody strange rules on the East Coast,.

As a backpacker almost 30 years ago I holed up in a lovely spot just north of Kuantan. So not as far north as Terengganu, my mistake, which was indeed more Muslim even in those days.

No diving for me! Just looking for a beach resort to recuperate after a visit to Taman Negara. (The wife is keen on tropical plants and palms so need to take her somewhere jungle-y after KL!)

Can foreigners rent cars? Did I read that an International driving permit is required?

Sorry for hijacking the OP’s thread..!

Yes forigners can rent cars. You need a driving lucence that conforms to the Vienna convention, which is basically what we British call a photo licence.
The old paper British licence needed a international permit because it was not to the Vienna std.
With a V Std licence you can read name, class, expiry etc in a std location, you dont need to read the language, I'm sure a cutrent NZ licence will meet this std and be Ok,

Sorry, if you are renting a car you will need a Touch and Go card to pay highway toll, you cant use cash any more.
Toll is aporox 1rm for 10 km, you need to buy the card and pre load it.
Please note if you hire a car at the airport, you will need the card to get to KL so buy it when you get the car, unless you really know your way around the back roads, you can not get to KL, Johor or East coast without a card, the first toll is 5km from the airport. If you don't get one at the airport then get it at the very first service station after the airport.

Maybe a hire car from a big hire company at the airport will have the new chip technology in the screen, and they will back charge your credit card, but ask, you will then need to look and use the right lane at the toll booth.
