Going back to wonderful kefalonia (Lassi)next week and wondered about hiring a little boat for the day-
I have absolutely no experience whatsoever in a boat,is it a good idea?
Any pitfalls or anything I need to be aware of?
Any scams from the rental places to look out for?
Cheers

Do it, it’ll be the best day of your trip. Renting a boat allows you to get to the little coves others annoy reach!

The boats are small and easy to handle, generally with a 40hp motor which you can rent without a licence and would be enough for the boat to ‘plane’, if that means anything to you? It’s basically where the hull starts to lift out of the water and it will zip along quite happily. Not scary by the way!

I rented a little boat in Fiskardo last year - do the usual and check google reviews. Ask about fuel usage - I had to pay for fuel used which was a fairly basic calculation based on how much of their Jerry can did they get back in the tank

As well as checking for obvious damage as you would a rental car, tilt the outboard and check the propellor. A decent rental company should do this for you to show any damage. Then make sure you don’t go to close to the beach and ding the prop on rocks.

Go for one with a sun cover if you can. Damn hot without it.

Worth every penny I assure you but I have to confess that I love boats!

We did this a few years ago. Rented from Agia Effimia and went looking for secluded beaches between there and Fiskardo. Was really good fun, and the beaches we found were lovely. Having an entire beach to yourself if nice.

The company we rented from showed us the propeller before to show it had no damage, I think that is their biggest concern. We took photos to make sure.

Overall I would definitely recommend it.

I can highly recommend Boulevard Boat Hire in Agia Efimia - Johnny is a great guy and will give proper tuition and solid advice before you go out.

It's amazing to visit and anchor in the little coves - take a picnic and take some spare bread to feed the fish. One of my best travel memories is a day on a boat with my other half in that gorgeous turquoise water.

Agree with all of the above, but be careful which deserted cove / beach you choose. Some of them are deserted for a reason. We stopped in one and soon noticed that pieces of rock would fall onto the beach from the cliffs above - some of them quite large.

We did this the other year from Katelios we worked out way down the coast towards Trapezaki (Lunch at Denis) the one thing Kefalonia really lacks is jettys so you have to go in pretty close with the boat. Most other places we've hired boats always have jettys which makes it much easier!

In the afternoons the south side of the island gets a bit of a breeze we actually had some decent swell on the way back on what seemed a really calm day on land. It will be a great experience and although we adore Kefalonia (looking like 3 trips this year!) I think there are better places for tourist boating like Corfu.

We've hired a small boat a few times on Greek Islands, and most recently on Corfu.
A lovely trip from Kalami, to lunch at Kassiopi really sticks in my mind. Fun to arrive in the harbour by boat, and moor-up.

Excellent-thanks for the info everyone.
Do you generally have to leave credit card details to hire a boat or will they just take cash on the day?

I say go for it. Take care and enjoy yourself!

We had such a good time renting a boat on a Greek holiday many years ago it inspired me to go on a RYC Powerboat 2 course in the UK. This got me an international permit to drive higher hp boats up to 30 feet. I've been able to rent boats in Greece, Spain and France.

I have found the larger and faster boats, although more comfortable and can go further, faster, gets more complicated and expensive, more of a faff, and as I found taking a day trip out with another family, becomes more risky and stressful when you get more on board.

So when we visited Xante last year it was great to get back into a small 40hp tub just to potter around the coast and anchor up in secluded bays for a swim or a picnic.

Don't forget you may be expected to pay for fuel which is common practice small can for a day pottering about could be €50 or so extra. Worth checking in advance if fuel is included.

Aah, island life! When we were given instructions to collect our hire car from the port on Paxos, the car was open and the key was behind the sun visor!

can also reccomend Boulevard Boat Hire in Agia Efimia. Johhny is a really nice guy and a proper boat person who will set you right, will even show you the best way to fill the ice box. The other place in agia efimia was yellow boats i think, Thats a bit more traditional hire place, Was a young teenager sitting under a parasol looking disinterred but seen enough of them around so presume they would be alright.

Canopy is a must but everything i seen had a canopy anyway.

We had a bit of a disaster of a day when trying to get parked after knocking over the local taxi company owners moped who had also had his car side swiped by another tourist in a hire car the week before so he was exceptionally angry and meant a delay to our boating adventure as we stood about trying to figure out the insurance details.

Johnny actually came up the road to calm the guy down and act as mediator then as we had spent an hour hanging about said just come back in an hour later if you wish.

We just had that in Lixuri

Arranged to meet them at 9.30 to hand keys over and sign docs. No sign of anyone by 10 so called them and they had just left it in the car park for us. Never signed any paperwork at all.

Last year I nipped out for some shopping at a mini market in Katelios and after racking up a 25 euro bill realised I forgot my wallet. The guy just said to drop in with it in the morning or some time before we left. Literally never raised an eyebrow you just wouldn't get that anywhere else these days! I went back to the digs and came straight back with the cash but just unbelievable in this day and age.

We were in Lixuri the other week Skala and Lassi to go this year we love it there. If it was a bit warmer in the winter we would be living there.

There's a couple of boat hire places in Lassi - I think from memory at Makris Gialos and Paliostafida (in front of the Mediterranee Hotel). I'll be there and out on the water in around 3 weeks. Enjoy!
