Anyone recently been who can comment on the tourist tax. The Vistax website doesn't work and online suggestions appear to be don't bother.

I paid it last year, nobody checked at the airport - although we were flying to Mexico City rather than directly back to the UK.

Yes that seems to be the general consensus. It is not a great deal of money though, so would rather not take the risk.

They don't check, until the day when they decide to do random checks, which they do do. Note that they only accept cash if paying at the airport kiosk.

confused

You were scammed then, because it didn't come in until April 2021.

That's why I paid it.

One bit of advice re Mexico if flying internally with the local airlines, don't reply on the airlines App to actually run in the airport and show the checkin/boarding card.

  • Volaris from Mexico City to Acapulco, working perfectly until I needed card. Had to go and get a manual check-in, which wasn't an issue apart from my lack of Spanish and the airport workers lack of English.
  • Viva Aerobus from Cancun back to Mexico City - the app went and updated itself between Tulum and Cancun and kept crashing at the airport.
The sea around Tulum was full of seaweed which rather messed up the blue Caribbean image I had when booking the hotel. This was the beginning of August. It stank as well.

Are you going here https://www.visitax.gob.mx/sitio/

If so, how far do you get? I can click through to where names & passport numbers are required. Stopped at this point.

I've got past there - but only if I VPN in as if I'm in Mexico.

edit: I can't remember if I had to do this last year.

I had a similar issue with booking a Volaris ticket - and I had to take out an Amex card as Visa wouldn't verify - both directly and via Expedia.

Just to update this thread for the benefit of searches etc.

In resort on an MX IP I managed to successfully access the website https://www.visitax.gob.mx/ and made the payment.

Chipped up at airport, went through check in, security and into the airport. Found somewhere to grab some lunch, then onto Gate B for international departures. To gate for departure and onto plane.

Not once stopped to validate tax. I'd therefore be inclined to treat as optional next time.
