Where to stay on the way to Interlaken
Discussion
Afternoon All
Very long time lurker here, I did register and post a couple of times about LM24 back in approx. 2012 but now can’t find or reactivate my account so have had to start again.
Anyway I’m after a bit of advice.
We are going on holiday to Interlaken at the end of this month.
We live in Yorkshire and the plan is to drive down to the Eurotunnel on the Friday night, stay overnight at a hotel near Ashford and then get on a train approx. 10.30 on the Saturday morning. This is all booked.
We need to be at the campsite by 6pm on the Sunday in Interlaken. The issue is I can’t decide where to stay on the Saturday night.
The journey from Calais is 520 -550 miles in total ( depending on the route ), we will be in a Transit Custom based camper which is ok to drive but the most I have done so far is approx 300 miles in one day.
The wife can but won’t drive on the continent so it is down to me.
Doing more of the journey on the Saturday sounds good but there is a risk of the train being delayed ( It is meant to be a busy day ) and I guess the roads will be busier. I would like to break the back of the journey but am concerned about having to drive for a lot longer than expected due to delays and then being shattered on the Sunday.
I like the idea of Luxembourg but it would then leave approx. 330 miles to do on the Sunday, I would then be concerned about missing the cut off time of 6pm at the campsite. ( This can’t be extended )
Does anybody have any suggestions for places to stop and even better if you have a hotel name. Although we have a camper we will stay in a hotel on the Saturday night, ideally just off the motorway.

Last year we did Chester -> Calais -> Annecy (5 days) -> Konstanz via Interlaken (that was a days transfer) and stayed in Konstanz for 3 days -> Metz -> Chester
Driving through Interlaken, that area looked incredible, we hit it on a almost cloudless late august day and the water was incredibly clear and with the local landscape looked incredible...so first of all have a fantastic time
Really the world is your oyster here, and going to depend alot on how much your wanting to drive (apologies i'm not helping much here).
One thing we really did enjoy, and was a bit different so maybe something that you can work into way there or way back.
Inbetween Interlaken and Konstanz was the Rhine Falls, which was quite spectacular to see, inbetween the rhine falls and konstanz is Stein am Rein which is a picturesque classic european town, and then the black forest was lovely to drive through (stopped in Triberg to walk up the waterfall and also where cockoo clocks are a local speciality!).
Its one hell of a diversion going that way and means two long days of driving but will put that out there as something different Would probably need you to get Strasburg or even onto edge of blackforest on first leg to work.
NB: Remember to sort out your Swiss Vignette, unless you want to stick to non-motorways in Switzerland but can take a while to get anywhere!

There's an Aire de camping car pretty much half way here It's near a lake, has a boulangerie fairly close by and is where we stopped every time on the way to the Alps in our motorhome. If you don't have a loo in the van or want something a bit better there's a half decent campsite just round the corner.
With regard to the Swiss vignette(which you can buy at the border), on one trip I decided not to use the Swiss motorways and save the extra cost.
This didn't work out. Every little hamlet or village there is a 50kph or even 30kph limit with cameras and also lots of traffic lights.
The cost of the extra fuel used would have gone a long way to paying for the vignette. Also it takes ages to cover the distance

OP I know you've got your hotel at the tunnel and tunnel trip booked but for future advice I always do the tunnel the night before and stay around Calais overnight.
That way when you wake up you've already adjusted to the time difference, can have a good breakfast and can hit the road at a reasonable time with no potential delays or stress getting over (or under) the tunnel. The other benefit is that the tunnel prices are normally a bit cheaper later in the evening and tend to be quieter as well so less queues.

Can’t add much to the sensible options above but we’re in interlaken at the moment. Hiked up the Harder Kuln yesterday and suffering for it today. It’s absolutely beautiful.
We made our way down stopping at the aire in Bruges then moving on to cochem in Germany, trier and then triberg in the Black Forest before staying in lucern for a night before arriving in interlaken. We’ve decided to stay for 4/5 nights as it’s so nice.

We are doing Hook of Holland to Colmar on the way to Bellano in an EV with a 7 year old. Actually thought about getting to Interlaken on day 1 to stay but been there before and fancied staying in France for a couple of nights.
Colmar is a great place to spend a day , was there a few weeks ago.Edited by gangzoom on Monday 19th June 21:45
We have been travelling through France , Switzerland , Italy for 3 weeks, now coming up through the Black Forest for 4 days then in to NL.
The Rhine Falls was mentioned above , definitely worth a look in , not expensive either
