Well you are certainly living up to your name. Great puzzle.

We shall guess the starting location, destination, type of car.

In the south east from a business district to the railway station. That’s the cheapest option, for everyday value. snigger.

Advance booking with Uber can throw up some strange pricing. I've not found it particularly reliable either - they can still cancel - or tell you they are running late.

Might as well just book it closer to when you need it IMHO

Yeah I’ll try on the day, if not there are local companies.

I was off to an airport a while back.

Easy. Just Uber it.

Local cab firm was 20% cheaper

Uber is steadily ramping up prices to offset losses, and since losing the recent court case.

No idea where you live but try Bolt / Freenow or local company instead.

Ring the local cab company. They won't cancel on you, they'll tell you the price up front and give a VAT receipt and take card payment.

Uber is a dreadful company.

Mine did, twice. That's why I started using Uber.

Surge pricing. 6 miles into Leeds a few weeks ago:
Uber £35 quoted
Local taxi company £12

Well, use a more reliable local one then.

Daft sweeping statement. Certainly in London, Uber saves me a fortune, arrives on time, are polite, and efficient. Infintely better than black cabs - at a fraction of the price.

In Thailand, Bangkok, "Grab" have made a similar impact.

On Thursday I paid £9.89 for a 1.1mile journey from Trent Bridge cricket ground to Notts train station ... so based on that it seems about right tbh.

Your local company must be different than the ones around here. Totally unreliable even for pre-booked journeys. Late or no shows are common.

All taxis have card payment meters, but they often don't work or the driver will flatly refuse card payment. They'll take you to a cash machine even when you've said in advance it will be card payment. Others have asked for additional payment if using card.

We don't get prices upfront either. The same journey at the same time, usually after pub closing time when the roads are quiet, and fares rarely match the tariff.

It feels like a common theme across the world that the taxi trade is untrustworthy.

Since losing the court case my experience of UBER in London has worsened.

Far fewer cars are available and I've often had cars drop out, after accepting the fare.

It's disappointing, as before the judgement the service was nigh on perfect.

Yes, been in some interesting motors S600, amazing spec A8 & brilliant Jag that took us from St Pancras to twickenham.

Twice in the past fortnight I’ve tried to pre book an Uber from the station home whilst I’ve been on the train, so booking around 20 mins in advance. Both times the fare has shown up as over £45 so I’ve not bothered. Order an Uber once at the station and its less that £7.

I’d love to use a local firm but there is only one and they are very unreliable, assuming they even answer the phone at all.
