Going for a few days in summer with a group of lads (30s and 40s), just checking if anyone had been and there were any must do visits or activities whilst there. Thinking along the lines of…

Saltzburg - places to drink, eat, areas to visit, nightclubs, just interesting stuff to do in the day etc. are there any boats on the river etc. which you can go on, that sort of thing.

Wolfgang - places to eat and drink, good activities on the water, anywhere reasonably close to visit.

There not that much online to help research.

Thanks

Get the train up the Schafberg and then walk back down. You could do it in reverse if you enjoy punishment.

There's a salt mine which is quite fun. https://www.salzbergwerk.de/en

Following on from what Master Bean said, the Kelsteinhaus (Eagle's Nest) used by Hitler is just across the border and is definitely worth a visit. It's an easy trip from Salzburg.

And when you're in Salzburg keep an ear out for the clown car sirens the police use on their vehicles. biggrin

There was a relatively recent episode of Travelman where they went to Salzburg. Unfortunately I only saw this after I'd booked and pre-paid for a hotel for 2 nights there.

It's a perfectly pleasant city, but not really worth spending any amount of time in unless you're a massive fan of Mozart (at least I think it's him). The salt mine (there are 2, the one in Germany is easier to get to) is fun for a morning. The Eagles Nest is very definitely weather dependent.

As for places to eat and drink, there's a nice beer garden in the old town and then a couple of pleasant enough bars on the other side of the river.

Enjoy

I was in St Wolfgang a few years back with the gf, so a bit different to a lads holiday. There's a ferry that potters around the Wolfgangsee that was a nice way to get around - you can get some pretty good beer on it too. We went for lunch in Stroble , also St Gilgen down the other end of the lake, also went up the cable car at St Gilgen and walked back down. My calves were balls of fire after that though, which made the next couple of days a bit tricky. We took the steam train up the Shafberg, had a beer, then took it back down. The views from up high are stunning. We also did a walk up to the Schwarzensee, where there was a choice of two beer gardens. Which was nice...

We also took a train to Hallstatt, which was stunning but over-run with visitors - and yes, we know we were part of the problem.
