We're planning on going in July, want the typical Rome experience. Pretty much pizza, architecture and the colloseum.

I'll leave it at that otherwise I'll start waffling so where have you been that you'd recommend? smile

I went last November and stayed at the Cosmopolita Hotel Rome (a Hilton)

Decent hotel, just been redone and a 10 min walk to the Coliseum, great location.

I’ve stayed at the Hassler by the Spanish Steps a couple of times. Great service, good rooms and very central.

EDIT - I have just been on the booking sites censored !

There’s no way I paid £700 a night. Something odd has happened since COVID. Or maybe seasonal fluctuations have caused a spike.

We stayed in this Airbnb. https://www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/2801581?source_impr...

Noticeably not an hotel but only a few steps away from the Pantheon and with a roof terrace, perfect for an Aperol spritz before strolling around town, choosing a restaurant for the evening.

We stayed at the Hotel Forum.

Spectacular it was not (breakfast especially). But it could not have been better located, the staff were great and they recommended consistently good eateries.

We did Airbnb as well and was halfway between the Pantheon and Castel San Angelo. Nice part of a Rome and east walk to most locations

Not long back and stayed in the Dharma Style. No complaints, and the room had a Turkish bath (steam room built into the shower) that was very nice after walking around all day.

Also not sure rome is the best place for a holiday in July, it will be very very hot, and everting is outside to see, so it will be baking and busy. I went in November, it was 20 degrees the whole time

It's a good point.

The Colosseum used to have a gauze canopy to shelter the Romans from the sun during the summer. The OP won't benefit from that, obviously.

We last went in October and the temperatures were equivalent to an English summer; we would not have wanted it any warmer.

Stayed at the Nerva boutique hotel a few years back....

https://www.hotelnerva.com/en/

It was excellent. Location, staff, room, service. Highly recommended. Looks like it's held it's place as one of the best in Rome too. (13th of 1381 in Rome on TA). Tucked down a quiet back road (facing directly onto the walls of an ancient fort, but just moments walk from bars, restaurants and some of the major places to visit).

Big thumbs up from me.

I've only been to Rome once so don't have a lot of experience to draw on but we stayed at the Mascagni and really liked it.

https://www.mascagnicollection.com/en/

Edit: Prices seem to be about 20x higher than when we went, it was nice but not £5000 a night nice!

Are you driving? This IS pistonheads! :-). IF so the Mercure is slap bang in the middle by the colloseum and has a roof top bar and pool. Priceless after a swealtering day out.

Also priceless was the expression on the faces of a German couple doing front crawl lengths in the waist deep pool where everyone else was drinking proseccos and Aperols, that , they were not in the right place for excercise swimming.

Good luck, hope you have a great time (you will).

Be careful with Booking.com however, I now consider them a high risk broker. That is based on having properties with them and seeing first hand their operating principles.

Had a great time indeed, got back a few hours ago smile why are booking.com high risk? I book 99% of accomodation through them - quite regularly too.

In short because of where they are in their business lifecycle. I won’t go into detail here, but Google it.

Glad you had a good time, Rome’s great isn’t it!

Where did you end up staying? I am looking to go in November, and researching hotels at the moment.
