One night stay reccomendation - West Germany/France Border

Last piece of the puzzle for our August family holiday - looking for somewhere to stay for one night on the way back from Switzerland to the Ferry in Rotterdam. Not doing mega long days in the car with laddo in the back so have planned it for two days. We are routing South through Germany and going to Speyer, near Mannheim and the Hockenheimring on the way out for the Technik Museum.
Tempted to prefer a mainly German route on the way back too...?
Just after some ideas of somewhere to stop, roughly halway, preferably somewhere pretty or interesting, easy accessed off the motorways, with a bit of scenery, a good park, a lake, a nice town etc etc to give us something to do in the afternoon and plenty of cheap hotels. Preferably not traipsing all the way into a city centre... somewhere nice and small is fine.
22nd August, in case anyone happens to know of anything fun happening that day in Germany somewhere!

This is obvs a car centric website hence how I came to the above conclusion last summer
Its a lovely place with lots of stuff to do for the rest of your party whilst you do the dirt cheap circuit tour which was fantastic
Plenty of bars and restaurants for all budgets too
The missus wants to go back for a long weekend - this is fine by me
