We are off to Vegas for six days end of June, staying at The Mirage. I have all of the dinner stuff sorted as been there multiple times, but I've never ventured out anywhere beyond the Strip.

As the current Mrs S is coming along this time she is on about going to see the Grand Canyon, which is fine but I absolutely will not travel on a helicopter. So I was planning on hiring a car for a day or two, driving out to the GC and then coming back and perhaps staying overnight somewhere like Boulder City and hanging out. Anyone done the trip, or think it is a st idea?

Helicopter thing is just me being soft, I don't like flying but it's a necessary evil but choppers are off limits. I figured it was easily driveable and might make a nice break from all the lights and showbiz for a day or two.

Now then Jeff.

I have been to the Grand Canyon a few times (including a hike to the bottom) and also stayed in Boulder City for a couple of nights, so will gladly give my usual poorly thought out opinions...

1) Make sure you drive all the way to the south rim for the full GC experience. The west rim is closer (but still not that close) but not so impressive.

2) Boulder City is the only place in Nevada that doesn't allow gambling, so has a quaint (by American standards) Main Street with a few bars and restaurants. I stayed over a couple of weekend nights to break up a two week trip. I stayed in the Best Western which is an art deco motel style place within walking distance to the town centre. It is also close to the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead - there's a small museum about building the dam in the town.

3) It might be a better plan to stay overnight nearer the GC and be able to see the sunset/sunrise (I've not done this so can't offer any recommendation).
