Crazy car hire prices
Discussion
Going on hols in July and looking to hire a car for 4 weeks. Prices are crazy this year, looking at around £1100-1200 for a basic car. That's £300 a week.
In comparison, had a hire car for 2 weeks in April and that was £85 a week.
What is the justification in the price being 3.5x higher? Surely it's not supply and demand, if it is makes you wonder who is stupid enough to pay that price for a car. No doubt the hire companies would blame the war in Ukraine, seems to be the excuse for everything these days.

So begs the question as to who is stupid enough to pay that amount of money for a basic hire car, probably have to supply own lube too.
Lots, will charge extra if you don't specify " no sand" in lube...Read the small printaturnick54 said:

Going to Greece next week. SUV for £260 per week reduced to £80 as Jet2 apparently refund you the cost of the transfer!
More than happy with that!
For a weeks hire by the way.
Did you book that through Jet2? Great priceMore than happy with that!

Some car hire companies are still suffering from lack of stock.
The car hire company I use regularly in Spain was forced to run their cars much longer than normal as they couldn't get delivery of new cars.
It's only recently that they have had deliveries, so the prices have been high on what limited cars they still had available.
The model they operate is also like the airlines, book early and the prices are cheaper but the closer you get the more prices go up as they run out of availability.
I had a quote last year of £400 a week in a polo, likely the very last car they had available.

Things are biting hospitality companies hard in europe at the moment due to their fleecing of tourists
Everywhere you go in southern europe apart from the absolute elite hotels (six senses / four seasons) are suffering a really poor early season; may, june.
some of it is the poor weather this season but a big part is ridiculous price increases, from restaurants, car hire and accommodation at hotels (self catering private rentals not such big increases)
We live in south of france and have noticed a massive drop off in tourism and its being widely reported as one of the worst seasons ever, we’re now touring across into spain, Portugal and back across the top of spain and into france again, we have our pick of any 5* hotel, any room across all areas with 24 hours notice, unheard of in previous years.
Except at weekends where locals are taking weekend breaks.
Non Michelin star nice restaurants for 3 course lunch with 1 x g&t each? €180 throughout and they’re mostly empty tbh, 1* / 2* michelin 240+, dinners are the same whereas they used to be priced higher, seems theyre trying to catch the lunch brigade..
You cant get a room right now without breakfast included, so, we’ve never done it before, but this time we’re eating a big breakfast as late as possible (never normaly eat breakfast) and we’re not hungry again until 17:30 at which point we find a top rated in town restaurant and avoiding the hotel cuisine altogether and really enjoying it.
Really is a rip off currently unless you work round it, i dont care if we can afford it, i wont pay it as they’re trying to ride last years boom bounce back from the pandemic.
