Am looking to do a couple of weeks in Egypt in November, probably a week on the Red Sea diving and then another week or 10 days looking at the old st. hehe

November shouldn't be too hot, should it? Is there a rainy season to avoid? Any tips would be appreciated, I did hope to get out there in March/April this year but the dates didn't work. Will be mainly in the South with maybe a flight out of Cairo on the way home.

Equally, any recommendations for places to visit would be good, or diving companies to go with/avoid.

Ir rarely rains in Egypt so no rainy season. I have been at the end of October several times and weather is generally very good, probably high 20's in the day time and still warm enough in the evening to sit outside in a t-shirt. The sea is still a good temperature for diving, sea can vary from flat calm to pretty rough - but that is true all year round. We did get caught one year in a freak thunder storm at the end of October, which did cause some localised flooding as the streets just aren't built for rain.

It does get dark early in the evening, but as long as you get up at a reasonable time it doesn't really make a difference.

I have never looked around the tourist sites, but I would imagine that it will be a good time to visit as day time temperatures are quite a bit lower than the summer.

Which area are you planning to visit for diving? Egypt has a huge coastline.

November is a good time. Certainly not too hot.

I’ve dived in Egypt using Emperor Divers. A good safe company unlike many out there,

Thanks, flights are now booked and just looking at liveaboards, was already considering Emperor Divers so good to hear they're a decent outfit. Can I ask what trip you did, and whether it would be better to go North or South in the Red Sea to see bigger things (sharks, more open water species etc)?

Book a liveaboard out of Marsa if you want pelagics at that time of year. Perhaps Hurghada would be okay. If you stay in Hurghada you could catch the bus across to Luxor (4 hours) and see the sites there (Karnak, Valley of the Kings etc). Luxor will be a bit hotter.

Recently back from a week liveaboard with Emperor Divers on Emperor Elite sailing out of Marsa Alam.
Nice boat, great diving. I would recommend southern red sea for best chance of seeing large pelagics.
November will be fine, warm enough to sit out.

I didn’t go from liveaboards, but dived daily out of Hurghada. A lot of the dive sites within day diving distance are overdived so really the further you go the better it gets. I would head south to be honest. I’ve dived off of Yanbu which is Saudi & at bit further south than Marsa Alam. There’s little diving down there so the bigger stuff is more plentiful

Perfect, thank you both. Pretty much exactly what I was planning to do - flight into Hurghada, transfer to Marsa Alam to catch a boat and then over to Luxor afterwards. The diary will have some spare days to fill with maybe a trip down the Nile or a flight up to Cairo, can decide on that later.

On that subject is it possible to get a boat from Luxor to Aswan cheaply in Egypt? The prices tour operators want which are £150+ per night which seems very expensive, I expect that £150/night goes a very very long way in the local currency!

You will find prices in your hotel are cheaper.

It does. However October/November is the height of the season in Luxor so you will actually hit peak prices. Be aware the boat to Aswan can take a few nights, some people get the train down from Luxor or vice versa to speed things up a bit. Plenty to see on both banks in Luxor though. The hot air balloon rides are very popular, we'll be doing one in September, can't wait.

Sorry to drag this back up, but do the dive guides/captains etc expect a tip at the end of a trip, and if so how much?

Yes, Tip as you see fit. About 10% of the cost of the trip in cash would be generous.
