Hi all, moved back to the UK during COVID and after 10yrs of being away have 2 trips to London in as many months, once the O2 next week and then at the docklands in a few weeks.

Whilst have a few days conference at both, any nice pubs or sights to drop in on if I get a few spare hours of an evening?

Staying next to the O2 next week and at a hotel next to Excel for the next one.

Whilst I am sure I’ll work it out, quickest way to get from Paddington the Greenwich (sorry lazy!)?

The O2/Excel areas themselves are both rather soulless wastelands, Excel more so than the O2 - but thankfully both have reasonable public transport links.

From the O2 you can just jump on the Jubilee tube line and have half of London open to you in a 10-15min ride. "Nice pub" can mean many things but going Jubilee (westbound) to Canary Wharf, then DLR (towards Lewisham) down to Cutty Sark is a good spot, or Jubilee (westbound) to London Bridge and in/around Borough Market.

Slightly harder from Excel but you just need to jump on the DLR (westbound) to Canning Town and swap on to the Jubilee (westbound) from there.

As for things to do O2/Excel way the only thing that really stands out to me is "Up at The O2" where if you know when you'll be free you can book to walk up, over the top of the 'tent'.

As for getting to/from that part of London and Paddington probably either Bakerloo line to Baker Street or Elizabeth line to Bond Street and change onto the Jubilee line, or Elizabeth line all the way to West India Quay and Jubilee from there or Elizabeth line all the way to Excel.

Many thanks - good info. Tube line info especially, not sure I’ll have that much free time but if I do I will not be taking my vertigo’d ass off the ground laugh

Greenwhich has quite a few decent things to see
The cutty sark, greenwhich observatory, the maritime museum.

The cable car is quite fun way to get around, or you could take the Uber boat down the Thames to somewhere else, if you like architecture you can ride it all the way to battersea power station which is a amazing place to see. I loved it there.

I'd be tempted to persevere with Greenwich, it's a small distance from the O2 (which itself isn't brilliantly situated as others have mentioned).

Excel and Docklands are awful though (museum aside), I'd either wander or take the DLR to the Grapes in Limehouse which is part owned by Ian Mckellen. You'll see Gandolph's staff behind the bar and there's a restaurant upstairs albeit serving average pub fayre.

There's a few gems nearby if you know where to look, but both seem a bit soulless on first glance!

Well, if your idea of fun is riding a really expensive cable car they goes from the middle of nowhere on one side of the thames to, umm, the middle of nowhere on the other side. I mean £6 each way, really!

Oh, and for the OP - don't mix up your Greenwich stations.

- "Greenwich" (DLR/National Rail) - Fine but not really a place to visit.
- "North Greenwhich" (Jubilee)/"Greenwhich Peninsula" (cable car) - Just the 02 and a general feeling of dispare.
- "Cutty Sark" (DLR/river boats) - The tourist Greenwich you probably want, with the river/naval college/Cutty Sark/etc.
