See Google Maps and ferry routes and you'll realise why Bellagio is the best town to be based for Lake Como. The Metropole Hotel with a lake view room is a good choice there.
You will use the ferries, and all the destinations are good.
Take a ferry to Lenno, and have lunch over the Lake at Ristorante Plinio.
If you like gardens there's several good ones to see around the Lake.
Take the fast ferry from Bellagio to Como in the morning, explore Como (not much there really) then take the slow ferry back ...the one with the bar etc and just watch the lakeside pass by during the afternoon, excellent.
You can take a seaplane trip from near Como up the full length of the Lake if that's your thing.
If you are in Bellagio on a Sunday, you may be lucky as the local supercar owners might be parading there....awesome!
And as you have a car, beware ZTLs in Italy.

Bellagio is a nice place to visit and not far from Como but absolutely swarmed with Americans, almost unbearably so.
Can't visit Como without going to Bellagio Also, this being PH, you could do the Moto Guzzi factory. I have family in Mandello so have been several times.
Can highly recommend the Grand Tremezzo as a place to stay. They have their own launch which you can hire to take a trip around the lake. At night you can sometimes see some spectacular atmospheric conditions across the lake, definitely a room with a view is desirable. Wonderful times there....
Como is stunning, been a few times and just love the area. I'm not that fond of the City of Como (really not much going on apart from street vendors trying to sell you a load of tat) but there's plenty to see/do around the lake.
We stayed in Meneggio last time and used the ferry to cross to Bellagio .., we've driven over to Lugano, St Moritz and up the Stelveo pass which are all within 1-2 hours of Como if you want to get away from the lake for a day.
I guess July will still be v busy tho!
