I've a long weekend coming up in Gloucester, never been before and would really appreciate any recommendations for walks and restaurants. Also are there any heritage/transport museums etc?

Many thanks in advance.

Bars/restaurants - depends on your tastes, there are quite a few in the Quays ranging from cheapo chain to better places. If you're looking for something more up market Cheltenham can sometimes be a better bet. I'm always happier in Glos and have had many happy nights around the Quays and city centre from stag dos to work parties and whatever else. What sort of thing are you after? Transport museums - Jet Age museum is close by, although quite small. There's a waterways museum in the Quays as well although I've not been to it!

Thanks, restaurant wise I much prefer indies rather than chains but this doesn't have to mean pricey. I quite like backstreet stuff that's interesting or quirky BYO's if they still exist.

Waterways museum looks my kind of thing, good shout.

I've always enjoyed https://www.greekonthedocks.co.uk/

Walks - depends where you're based, bit could be worth the drive to the Forest of Dean for the Sculpture Trail, or a variety of others with various lengths.

If the long weekend is this weekend get yourself down to Prescott Hill Climb!

https://www.prescotthillclimb.co.uk/event-details/...

I'd generally head to Cheltenham if you're looking for individual restaurants and walks.

Cleeve Hill for walks is excellent and has endless possibilities for routes/lengths/difficulty. Tie in a walk with some Cotswold villages.

As for restaurants, number 3 (Phil Vickery) is very good - https://www.no3restaurants.com/
Kibou has a few sites now but is a cool/funky Japanese restaurant - https://kibou.co.uk/
Bhoomi is a ridiculously nice indian - won't feel rubbish after - it's delicious and good quality - https://www.bhoomikitchen.co.uk/

If you like your beers, get yourself down to the Deya brewery - https://deyabrewing.com/

Prescott is a terrific shout, I'm actually going the BH weekend where there looks to be a decent event on!

I take the point re Cheltenham, stayed for a long weekend a few years ago and liked it a lot. Would prefer to stay around Gloucester as not been before but good to know of the alternatives.

Iirc. There’s a war museum there but it’s not very big. By the docks. As for walks, loads around, depending if you want to be in town or the country. Nice walks on rodborough/ Minchinhampton common and a great ice cream place too, Winstones ice cream.

I would also recommend Cheltenham over Gloucester if you're looking for independent places to eat. There are a few in Gloucester though, as mentioned Greek on the Docks is good as well as the adjacent Settebello (sp?).

No.3 is really good, owned by Phil Vickery the ex-rugby player (who won celebrity Masterchef) and not the TV chef.
Nagomi is owned by the ex-head chef at Kibou and very good.
Bosco Pizzeria is very nice in a lovely location if the sun is shining and if you're feeling flush The Nook above it has great views.
The Beefy Boys is very popular at the moment.
Gallimores Kitchen is a favourite and very reasonably priced.
No.131 is very over-priced, full of pretentious types and Insta posting younger people!

Deya Brewery is fantastic and a real favourite of mine. It's right by the train station so can jump on the train from Gloucester. They usually have food pop-ups there. Check the closing times though as they shut fairly early due to location.

For walks - you are very near for for the Cotswold way, Gloucester way, Wysis way and Severn way. I would recommend getting out of the urban area though.

Westonbirt Arboretum is nice too, and not too far away.

At Bourton on the Water, which is about 25 miles from the centre of Gloucester.
A pleasant drive out, and an interesting place to visit.
On a fine day you will find people just sitting by the river and enjoying the peace, but you can always take a picnic to liven up the pace of life.

Assuming you are up for this bank holiday weekend, there's the cheese rolling on Cooper's Hill to watch.

Fantastic views, too. And beautiful woods for walks in the surrounding areas.
