I would like to take Mrs geeks away for our anniversary this year. We've not been abroad for sometime, not had a holiday in almost as long so I am looking to book a nice long weekend for this year as a surprise. Its mid July so I accept I have to pay the summer holiday premium c'est la vie!

So far on my list of candidates; Dublin, Malta and Lisbon.

We aren't the most active on our holidays, they mostly involve sleeping late, eating too much and being lazy. Mrs geeks is disabled as well so easy access anything (such as taxis etc) is a must. It would be good if we could avoid swarms of families and children, not because we don't like them but just because smile

Thoughts?

For the quick and easy weekend break we tend to favour Nice. (I’m assuming you’re in the UK). Relatively inexpensive flights, very quick access to the city from the airport. Head down to the beach in the day time (there are many very chic bar/restaurants which have sun loungers and private beaches - generally kid free, although they do cost a bit. We favour this one: https://www.sportingplage.fr/ or this one: https://plagenicebeaurivage.com/ but there are free public beaches if you’d rather save the cash) then the choice of lots of ‘old town’ restaurants all within a reasonably flat level walk.

The train to Villefranche or Antibes is good (don’t bother with Monaco, hardly worth it unless you’re in the billionaire camp) or you could just stay in Nice; visit the markets, have a drink in the sun, go for dinner. It’s all good.

Hard to beat if you only have a few days and don’t want any hassle.

Cheers for the suggestion FP, I haven't ever really considered Nice so I will have a look into it.

Seville is nice for a long weekend.

Walk around, good places to eat and drink, great weather and take in the intense flamenco show at the tiny little theatre in the big food market. It leaves you totally shellshocked by the end of it. smile

I've recently been to Lisbon which was fantastic fun however it's very hilly with many cobbled streets which may not fit for you.

I'd agree with Nice or as somewhere a bit left field Turin.

Edited - sorry missed that you're going in July so some of the Southern European cities might be a bit hot. Berlin is an interesting place for a long weekend.

Berlin is good for a few days and relatively cheap for a capital city.

Porto.

Bratislava - You could also fly to Vienna and just jump on a coach from the airport for approx 5 euros which takes you straight into Bratislava city centre in less than an hour. Or combine with a stay in Vienna and then take the 90 minute boat ride along the Danube to Bratislava.
Great place to wander around, plenty of restaurants and bars.

1.50h Flight, Great airport to get in and out of. Ultra cheap Uber's into city.
Great hotels.
Mostly flat.
Great old town.
Gnome hunting available.
The Zoo was a most excellent surpise.

Another vote for Nice as it has access to nearby places.

Puerto Pollenca in northern Mallorca as well (definitely over Malta)

It's not PH/PBCD/last word in luxury, but it is cheap, flat/accessible, sun and has beautiful views around the Pine Walk area. We go at least once a year and it's our default brain out/need to escape/don't need to think about it break.

Make sure you book somewhere near the older/Pine Walk end and not in the cheaper end as it's a slog to get to the main area from there.

ETA - just read you don't want to be near kids so maybe not Mallorca! biggrin

That sounds well worth a look...for me anyway paperbag
One thing that always has a bearing on our 'quick' weekends away is the ease at which we can fly away, unfortunately a quick look shows no joy for Vienna from East Midlands, doesn't rule it out completely though. scratchchin

We absolutely loved Lisbon and found it a fantastic city to just wander around exploring and taking in the sights.

Sorry to Hijack a thread (hope this might help the OP if anything), but off the back of this I've just booked flights for the Wife & I to Nice at the end of August (She works in a school, but also ties in with our wedding anniversary so no choice really)....we are arriving late on a Thursday night, departing on a Sunday evening, so 2 full days and a good 3/4 of a day.

I understand travel from the airport to town is quite straight forward on a tram for a couple of euro's? Just trying to work out where to stay now...? We won't hire a car, so looking at places within the City itself....those with reasonable prices that i've looked at thus far are Le Saint Paul, Locarno & Lamartine. Any other recommendations? Would consider an Air BnB, but would also like breakfast before we set off each day, hence looking at hotels for now.

We plan on having an afternoon/evening in Monaco, probably a boat trip along the coast, a little trip to Villefranche sur mer fpr dinner, but just wondered if anyone had any other recommendations for our 2/3 days mini break? Thanks in advance.

Two 'general' comments; 1. if you're near a tram you can get around really easily, 2. the further west or north of the old town you go, the grittier it becomes.

Personally I like to stay as close to the Old Town as possible. I find it has the nicest vibe, restaurants, little beach etc.

Le Saint Paul is near the harbour and away from the hussle and bussle, so perhaps a little sterile. Depends what you like.

Lacarno fails the too far west test.

Lamartine is the pick of your bunch.

Try Jean Medicin and Coeur de Nice as well.

Great place for a trip. Monaco is very overrated but it is a box that needs ticking.
