Afternoon all

In three weeks time I'll be driving down to the missus' sister's wedding in Lake Como, then we are going on a near 3 week tour of Italy and Europe. Im driving down on my own and am aiming to do the trip in 1.5 days (if I can make strasbourg on the friday eve) - and hope to stop at the Reims pits. Start is Colchester.

Ill be taking my 18 Targa 4 GTS, and we will be staying in Garda, then after the wedding at Como we will be going to Matera, back along the amalfi, then up to Florence, Geneva, Ghent, Bruges and then home.

Anyone done a similar trip in a similar car? I can get the basic advice off the internet but can anyone share any advice and anything to watch out for, there are tales about over zealous police in Switzerland and keen parking enforecement in Italy - dont fancy a clamped wheel!

Pic for attention, really looking forward to the trip.

Cheers all!

Travelling on your own I would recommend an Emovis or Bipandgo Tag for the French autoroutes. This will allow you to use the auto barriers at toll booths.
Stick to the Swiss limits and you'll be fine (make sure you have all required car docs). You can enjoy yourself on the passes wirthout being silly. You need a Vignette for Swiss m'ways.
Be aware some passes could still be closed due to snow in 3 weeks time.

Thanks for this mate. We will be driving through Pisa and Florence, which look like the only two cities that will affect us here. Would have probably disregarded the signs truth be told - cheers!

Great advice, many thanks. Im ordering the vignette thing for Switzerland and will get a tag for France. France is basically a slog down (apart from Reims) to kill the mileage so not stopping at all really unless for fuel or carbs.

Do you have a reliable link at all to see when the passes and which would be closed? Double post, apologies

Parked here for Pisa

and here for Florence.

Tram stop opposite the car park entrance - 5 minutes into the centre of Florence

Both outside their respective ZTL zones

Watch out at Reims they don't allow stopping any more.

The actual back side of the track opens occasionally, so worth checking if its open I think its free but they suggest a donation of a few euros. They normally open for groups so if there is a group you might sneak in. When the gates are open they do allow photos as they will have got permission.

I also heard the police are not as bothered about single cars so you might get away with it - but I would hop out take a couple of photos and be on your way again.

You will defo want a tag if you are flying solo on the autoroutes in a RHD car!

Google maps show some speed traps as average speed check zones.
Waze on the other hand is much better and shows 95% of them.

There are a lot of hidden mobile speed traps...

Also watch out for the cops on bikes, they will usually sail along at 180kmh so you look in your mirror one minute and they are not there then 30 seconds later 3 of the buggers are behind you..
