France Road Trip LEZ Questions
Discussion
Looking for some advice please.
Wife and I are planning on taking the Cerbera round the Alsace region of France and down to Annecy but it seems that the French have introduced a LEZ scheme that covers Annecy and Strasbourg and some other towns and Cities we would like to visit.
Are these rigorously enforced for non French cars or how do I comply with a 23 year old V8 that never met any emission standard anywhere.
It would be a shame if we have to miss out the major towns on out trip or not go at all due to this.

Have you checked if they are full time restrictions or on certain days? Lyon around the motorway network there’s a system the is applied when pollution levels are high.
Have you tried the CritAir site with your car details? Doubt it would be recognised or there maybe some classic status. My cars all have a Euro category so I’ve got stickers.
Just try the web site until it says “non”

I’ve never bothered with these crit air stickers and nothing has ever happened.
Anyone been stopped? Had something through the post?
Neither have I in the past so I guess I will continue that way.Anyone been stopped? Had something through the post?
How the hell are you supposed to know if the pollution levels are high driving towards a town?

If you download the Green Zones app, once you've registered your vehicle with Crit Air the app will list which areas you're allowed into. How well it's all enforced I've no idea but if you've got a Euro 4 barge like me then it's handy for plotting alternative routes.
Thank you, I will take a look.Don't particularly recall any around Annecy last year, I was in a Euro 5 Diesel so was on the look out (did have crit'air sticker as backup).
The one on the way down I did take not of in particular was Reims if you were planning to go into the City - old f1 track was outside of the LEZ zone.
Didn't really travel through Alsace on way back so can't speak for that area, was mostly on motorway from Baden Baden -> Metz when I came close to Alsace.

Interestingly, there is a recent article on the SpeedHunters website about classic cars in Paris, perhaps the strictest of the ULEZ/Crit'Air zones:
www.speedhunters.com/2023/04/from-paris-with-love
The article suggests, as I have long suspected, that the French have a somewhat Laissez-faire attitude to the whole system and just use their older cars in the evening or weekend, unlike us jobsworth Brits who have all rushed to order windscreen stickers and have crossed off large parts of country from our maps.

Unless you get stopped there and then I don’t think there’s a way for the French to access the uk registrations database due to brexit so fines being sent to uk addresses aren’t a thing at the moment. Same goes for speeding afaik, although I do wonder whether a return trip with the same registration number may trigger a stop if the car is spotted.

I think the chance of getting stopped as a tourist in a foreign registered car for a missing crit air sticker must be vanishingly small. I'm certainly not going to be bothering.www.speedhunters.com/2023/04/from-paris-with-love

Indeed. I think the only likelihood is if you are stopped for speeding in a zone and it is something else to easily add on to your bill (that is if it is even the Police who cover the Crit-Air zones?) I think it is worth noting, that the process of getting a sticker was very painless and only took a few weeks to come through and only cost a few EUR. Just needed to scan the v5 from memory as part of the system.
Might as well just get one sorted and not have to bother with the hassle. You also got a confirmation letter which I beleive can be used in lieu of the sticker itself if it hasn't arrived in time.
Reading around, they are valid for the length of time you own the car, so don't need to review so as the scheme inevitably expands you'll be covered.

Driven through Rouen a few times with no sticker etc, on way to Le Mans. Got away with it so far!
Prime opportunity for French police during Le Mans weekend too, with the amount of unsuspecting Brits driving through!
This is the first year that these restrictions have been in place Adam, so it'll be interesting to see how it works out. I'll be travelling down in Ye Olde Euro 4 Camping Car with a couple of mates, and have no desire to give French plod any opportunity to rifle through my wallet.Prime opportunity for French police during Le Mans weekend too, with the amount of unsuspecting Brits driving through!
We'll be going either East of Rouen and over the Seine at Pont de l'Arche or West through Yvetot and over the Pont de Brotonne, both much nicer routes than the centre of town.
