I got a friend who is visiting Cambridge and would like to know any attractions outside of Cambridge that can be done within a day (touristy places, scenic roads, any motor or military museums, cafes etc)

camb university if thats your thing - old buildings and such stuff. city is full of history things and churches and whatnot. punting. bridge of sighs, mathematical bridge. natural history museum, geology and archaeology -all free i think. Fitzwilliam museum, computing museum

but duxford is ace - unmissable.

Anglesey Abbey is a smaller version of the aforementioned Audely End

dont bother with the castle unless youre passing by anywyay. good rooftop view, but Windsor it aint!

Newmarket horse racing museum is much more interesting than it sounds!

trip to Ely is only half an hour, Cromwell stuff is quite inewtresting (oliver cromwell that is)

Another National Trust country estate option is Wimpole. Very nice walk around the estate (5.5 miles if you do the whole circuit).

In Cambridge, a punt trip is a good way to see "inside" some of the college grounds. IIRC, you can pre-book with some operators online for a discount.

If visiting Ely cathedral, pre-book on one of the tours. We had the guided Octagon Tower tour and the guide was excellent. Fair few steps to climb and a few small door ways to get through though.
