Not really done summer holidays much but trying to plan a long weekend away in June.

For convenience I’d like to fly direct out of Scotland but I see looking at likes of EasyJet & Jet2 they have days marked as “package holiday only” for a couple of places I’d checked

Are these likely to change nearer the time, trying to decide if I just leave it now & wait or if I do need to book a package holiday rather than sort out hotel etc myself.

Have heard of folks getting great last minute deals, Is it worth waiting if I’m not after anything in particular just somewhere warm with a pool/beach for two? Wherever I go though don’t want to be staying in a hotel full of loud brits singing karaoke which I’m maybe unjustly thinking the package deals on cheap flights might lead to (like I said not done this before)

(Also anyone know if I book a cheap package does it matter if I don’t actually turn up at the hotel, it won’t invalidate my return flight or anything silly?)

Done it a couple of times with no problems, just tell the tour rep., at the destination airport, you won't be using the accommodation.

You should check the prices for the package holiday compared to flight only. At least it will get you to where you want to be. I’ve done it a couple of times (albeit quite a few years ago). For example, in the UK I went with a mate to Portugal to visit some friends. The cheapest package was cheaper than flight only and at least gave us a base, which actually wasn’t terrible but the wrong town (albefuria instead of Lagos) but we were going to hire a car anyway and our friends found us a hotel in Lagos. We did use the original accommodation for the first few nights and then a couple of days before the return as we were in Portugal for two weeks.

As you are going in June prices will be higher of course. I’ve been on several package holidays cheap and expensive and none have been bad, just being in the right country / area then getting out and about is what I do, knowing that you have accommodation if you need it is important of course but you can roll up to a hotel somewhere else and see if they availability for one or X nights can be done..depends on your budget.

BTW… I’ve been living in Portugal for three years now

Just to add…obviously accommodation makes a difference if you going with a GF instead of a mate as not so important and can rough it a bit and be a bit random. If you’re going on your own then you only have to to responsible for yourself. I’ve travelled on my own too, just booked a flight, hired a car stayed in a few different hotels. It’s a gamble on what you get but I’ve been ok.

On the other hand I’ve packaged to a few places in Greece with a GF and paid less than 500 quid each for a week all inclusive. You don’t have live in the hotel but you know you have somewhere to sleep, eat, pool /beach etc when you want it.. Depends what you want and your budget…like everything.

Just noticed ..Doh..you say long weekend.. I’ve done a few of those too.. just been to Valencia for three nights. Really a long weekend flying uses up nearly two days. Phaffing at airports and getting to and from hotel. it’s ok but…not ideal.

Have you been looking on the airline websites directly or on Skyscanner/ Google flights?

I found with Jet2 they blocked the flights but wasn’t the case on other websites.

No, they won’t open up the flights to anyone else.

It’s not that they’ll be full of loud brits, it’s that the airlines would rather control the prices and not sell the most popular dates via the trade and have to pay them a commission.
