We are travelling to Croatia in September and after staying in Zadar for 1 week, we are planning to travel to Montenegro which involves travelling through a tiny coastal portion of Bosnia before it returns back into Croatia before we enter Montenegro.
Tried looking online and can’t confirm whether we need an IDP or not - the FCO advice doesn’t mention we need one.
We’ve already informed the car rental company regarding cross border travel so prepared to pay our €50 fee. We can’t travel on ferries though with the rental company we are using (some companies charge €125 for cross border travel so consider this to be a bargain!)
I’m also assuming we don’t need any vignettes for either of these countries.

As long as you have a licence with a picture you'll be ok, the IDP just translates the info into different languages, and UK (and other euro) photo licences don't have any words on them.

OK thanks for that Truckosaurus - I got forwarded onto some Bosnian motoring club website saying “get your IDP here”!

Montenegro you definitely don't need one. Most places only require on if you have a driving licence in a non cyrilllic script. Wave your British licence at most Montenegrin police and they'll let you go from routine stops, but be aware if you get caught speeding they take your licence off you - British or not - and you have to pay a fine at the local post office before collecting it back.

I rented a car in Montenegro a couple months ago and a UK photo driving license was just fine. For an extra fee I would have been able to take the car to Albania too. For eu countries (which Montenegro and Albania are not) a uk license is definitely fine.

Doesn't the Pelješac Bridge bypass that now?

Yes Albania attracts an extra fee €122 for the car hire company we’re using.
Strange that some companies won’t let you use ferries at all in Croatia whilst others charge between €30-50.

Yes- you don’t have to worry about Bosnian border now. Used to be a nightmare. Border guards selling you “special insurance” or just being a nightmare with paperwork.

That’s the beauty of Pistonheads - didn’t realise this was built and sounds like it saves a bit of hassle.
Cheers
