Bologna car hire recommendations
Discussion
Hi PH,
I'm due to visit Italy at the end of June. Flying into Bologna with wife and 1 year old daughter. I want to rent a car and was after recommendations on firms to use etc.
I had a read of this thread: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...
But given it's a few years old I wondered if anyone has up to date advice? Probably looking at a compact category car for 8 days.
Any help hugely appreciated.

We have used rental cars dot com. Be aware of no car zones in every Italian city. The signs aren’t that big and we are waiting for two fines from last year.
They are called ZTLs. They are everywhere in towns and cities and very easy to enter, hence lots of fines! If your accommodation is inside a ZTL (quite likely), before you leave UK get them to register you so you can go in and out of that specific ZTL. I've never done this but I have read elsewhere this is what you need to do
R.
used zestcarrental.com a couple of times to rent from Bologna, no problems at all, small and civilised airport with a separate car park for rentals about 100m from the front door, never had any pressure to pay for extra insurance.
Had a brand new lpg powered golf last time, lpg is a big thing in Italy so no problems filling up despite my initial concerns.
Hire company was Optimorent who were fine, have used zest website on many occasions and always ok so far.

get someone to point them out to you and they become very obvious. rentalcars.com or doyouitaly.com. used both no issues. get yourself an annual multi trip global excess policy for about 100quid a year, makes running the gauntlet more comforting.
