New York flights with shorter hotel stay - flexible package?

We’re looking to go to New York from the UK in May (4 of us) and sensible flights plus a central Manhattan hotel look to be about £3.5k as a package through Kayak or similar.
Individually, the flights seem to be about £2.5k and the (same) hotel directly about £2.5k also, so the package would represent a good saving.
However we will want to go and stay with friends outside NYC for the first couple of nights, before spending the rest of the week in the city. Does anyone know a travel agent that could do a similar deal but with a reduced length hotel stay, or a way of getting a more bespoke package from somewhere that still has the same purchasing power as the usual online agents?
You seem to be able to split airports but I can’t see a similar site where you can knock nights off the hotel bit! I’m hoping there’s a more economical route than just booking the week package and not turning up to the hotel for the first couple of nights, though that would still seem to be the cheaper option at the moment.

You can build hotel and flight packages on the BA website that don’t require a full length stay.
That gulf between deal and individual prices seems quite high to me. I would have thought it could be closed, have a look at price comparison sites or TripAdvisor with your required dates for the hotel. Google flights will be best for flight comparison.
