Budapest - Where to go what to do?
Discussion
The ruin bar scene is huge! we were there for 3 nights and only saw a fraction. Check out the obvious choices and then see what you stumble onto.
Beer related I would grab a few by the river overlooking the castle with the old trams whizzing by, a little pricey but a great spot to people watch and take in the views.
Also do the same but on the Buda side of the river, near Fishermans Bastion. Get there for sunset if you can the views are incredible.

I was there 3 weeks ago.
Leo Rooftop Restaurant is very good.

You'll get a great Goulash here

Hero's square is worth a look, along with the fake Romanian Castle and the steaming Duck Pond near the Zoo.

The Citadella is worth a walk around even though it is closed. Great views from up there at night.

And as others have said the Castle.

Get yourself a book of single use Public transport tickets and make sure you go on the Metro, It's old school.

Their "Beer Cocktails" are amazing. Great steak for £20 as well.

Well we had a great trip did the big open air spa that's kind of thing is totally not my scene normally but was worth a trip and we stayed for a good few hours.
The shoes on the riverside was pretty touching
Metro was a good shout really cheap we only spent £6 which got 10 trips between the two of us
Ruin bars were cool as well did the obvious big ones and stumbled on a couple of random ones but yeah you would need 2 weeks to visit all of them
One big take away was the lack of English spoken even the younger folk only seem to have very basic English. My best mate lives in Estonia where its taught from a young age and mandatory to speak in his workplace (IT) No such take-up in Hungary which is a shame for them it must hold them back as a country. Some of the bar staff were comically rude as well!
Pretty cheap by European standards though £3 a pint and £10 for a decent meal Hotel obviously quite a bit more expensive. We stayed at Hotel Moments which was in the watch quarter by the looks of it. Rolex shop next door had 5 security guards!

Good tips. The shoes by the river was especially poignant.
Planning to go in May with some friends.
Was there 5yrs ago with the Mrs and got by speaking English so am surprised that it was a hinderance.
Also deal with a number of people via work (some back office functions are done there) and their English is a lot better than my Hungarian!

Yeah it was pretty surprising. In the Hotel they were ok but literally everywhere else it was a real struggle very unusual for a European City unless your talking to the elders but this is young folk working in service/attractions/restaurants etc and it was pretty much everywhere.
That's odd, was a few years ago we were there but had no trouble whatsoever The baths are an absolute must. The big ones at Szecheyni. A proper cultural experience, and good fun to boot. Plus you can get there on the wonderful Belle Epoque underground railway.
Love Budapest, it's ideal for a long weekend. The only downside is that the food is not great. 20 years ago it was at least fairly cheap and mediocre, now it's quite expensive but still mediocre. Great coffee though.

To add a couple of museums which are worth a look:
"Hospital in the Rock" on the same side of the river as the Bastion/Castle etc - https://www.sziklakorhaz.eu/en/
Terror House - https://www.terrorhaza.hu/en (Went a few years ago and it was quite a sobering place to visit, but definitely interesting and very well done).

There is a shooting range where you can fire handguns and shotguns if that interests? Things you can't do in the UK.
I wish I'd known about that we would definitely have done that! You can have a look through the stuff available by clicking into the packages. Loads of stuff from a Luger pistol to a AK47 and pump action shotguns.
