1 year backpacker travel insurance , 500£ per person?

Looking to go for a long trip away with the wife before settling down and having children. We are looking to travel globally and our current insurance will only do 90 day trips and must return to UK to start another trip. So it appears I need backpacker insurance, it's coming to around 1000£ ish for both of us. Is that the going rate or anyone have suggestions for somewhere cheaper to try
