Five of us are going to Faro for a week in August, a few days before school holidays.

Because of logistics we need 2 cars for the week. Any suggestions for cost effective car hire?

My wife and I need a small car such as a Yaris, whilst my son, his wife and 2 toddlers need something the next size up.

Easy Jets on site booking will only let us hire 1 car, the price of which would appear as though we are hiring a Porsche not a Yaris!

Having previously had a nightmare with car hire at Faro - local company that didn't have cars actually at the airport, making you catch a shuttlebus and wait subsequently in a queue for hours - I would only book with a well known brand, regardless of cost.

I've used drive4fun before and they were fine.

August is not doing you any favours of course. However, make sure you have a separate car hire insurance policy. Takes minutes to get online and will save you a lot.

Other than that I’ve used “drive on holidays” out of Lisbon many times and had no problems, they have a place in faro too but can’t comment on that particular office.

Our dates are set in stone, appreciate it's school hols, but my son is racing in the British GT Championship round at Portimao, hence the 2 car requirement. Who is good to approache re the car insurance please?

I did through zestcarrental.com before covid, think it was rentauto that actually provided the car. Was a slightly beaten up Ibiza estate, did the job fine, took a video and a few photos to cover myself but no-one was bothered when I handed it back. They were in one of the carparks just outside the terminal.

Book early even Avis ran out of stock this summer.

I’ve used these in the past and cost about £40 a year.

Tho many others are available. Have never had to claim so don’t know how good they are about that. Buy one, read the small print, and just show a printed copy to the car hire company when signing the paperwork. Oh, and course, give the car and thorough look over before taking it away!

Son driving in GT! Good stuff, be sure to let us know how he’s doing.

I've hired cars at Faro dozens of times and based on my experiences I have two recommendations.

1: Avoid the big name companies, I had some bad experiences with them many years ago and wouldn't go near them again

2: Book a local provider at the airport such as Drive4Fun, MasterKings, LC Rent, through Zest Car Hire. Very straightforward booking process and clearly states the insurance provided. No shenanigans at the airport with trying to sell extra insurance, the hire companies are very honest about the dings and scrapes on the car and the return inspection is quick and easy.

I've been to the European Le Mans racing and FIA Masters at the Autodromo Algarve and it's a great circuit for spectators.

Avoid the big names because you had some bad experiences with them many years ago. Really?

Totally agree^^^^^^^^

We have an apartment in Benagil and have used Zest Car Rental for the past few years 3-4 times a year. Never had an issue with them. Always specify LC Rent as the provider and pay the 15euros to collect the car in car park 4 at the airport.

Several years ago we had a Clio and reversed into one of those canopies in the supermarket car park, resulting in a knife edge crease down the tailgate, from glass to bumper. On returning the car, I sheepishly owned up to the damage before the rep could see it. She walked round, rubbed the crease and said, 'that is nothing, just a little scratch'. We heard nothing more about it .

OP. whoever you choose, please take out the full insurance. On the day before we left, we went to Portimao, parked in a large carpark near the sea, when we came back from lunch, the car had been hit on the front wing and driver's door, big damage, luckily it was still driveable.

We've used https://www.zitauto.com/ before - they were recommended by a friend who has a place out there. This was a few years ago now though!
