We're planning to spend a weekend by Battersea Power Station.

We have to collect my daughter from Royal Holloway and it looks like taking the train would work best, at 5:00PM on the Friday.

Firstly, Battersea looks interesting enough for a weekend, or am I wrong?

Secondly, are we likely to be able to park at the station until Sunday? Google suggests there is usually availability but only 59 spaces and I can't see another option where I could book.

Any advice would be helpful!

Not sure if Battersea in itself is entertaining enough for a weekend, but you could either walk, train, bus or Uber boat down to the London Eye and easily kill a day walking along the South Bank. You could even take the boat taxi down as far as Greenwich, so yeah, there's plenty to do in easy reach.

Yes, rail strikes may be an issue.

We've done the South Bank fairly extensively before.

Grenwich was my first choice but the road or rail links from Esher on a Friday evening didn't look very attractive?

Bit sceptical that there is a weekend's worth of activities there, but for the power station it would be a good idea to book the chimney ride / lift, looks a really good bit of engineering, but maybe busy if not booked in advance.

Same token the cocktail lounge etc. looks ok but I'd make a reservation to be sure.

You will bored at Battersea power station after about 2 hours maximum.

You will get there, spend a few minutes walking round the outside thinking "Wow! This is amazing" and marvelling at the top quality restoration job, and the new flats surrounding it, then you will have a wander around on the Coaling Jetty for 10 minutes, and then you will go inside the power station, only to realise its just a shopping centre. Like, literally just a really mundane shopping centre with not all shop units open or let yet. Many of the shops are fairly obscure stuff as well.

Lift 109 would probably be worth doing while you are there. Probably best to book tickets in advance for that.

Don't get me wrong, the building is amazing, and it's really cool to see inside, but it's just like being in a big warehouse with shop units, and it's not as big as you think once you are there.

Then you will be looking for something else to do. Battersea Park is really nice and worth a wander round for an hour. There is the Battersea Brewery, and Arches Lane in general is worth a look down for an hour or so. But honestly, IMO, you can't really spend more than a morning or afternoon in the immediate vicinity of the power station.

Go there, enjoy it all, and then get the tube into other parts of London.

Thanks for the opinions. I guess I have subliminal messages from my youth, Animals by Pink Floyd is still a favourite.

I'll need to re-think. We stayed in the Shard for last years birthday weekend so we're done with skylines for a year or two.

So, where to spend a weekend with wife and two teenage daughters at the end of Jan, within an hour of Esher?
