York, advice for weekend away
Discussion
Looking to take the lovely Mrs Ruin away to York for her Birthday. Will be a long weekend in May. Any good hotel recommendations? Restaurants also.
No limits on cost of either.
Also..other than eat...what else can we do?
Probably no car as we will get the train up. Can drive of this is an issue.
Ta in advance.

The Principal is fancy and very nice, food distinctly average though.
On the outskirts there's a glamping place called the Little Hide, cutesy and adults-only.
There's an all you can eat Brazilian steak place in the centre, used to be called Vaqeiros but I think it's changed. 30 quid and they keep bringing you more, and more...
For something a bit charming theres a place called the Sidings about 10 minutes north of the ringroad. Old train carriages made into rooms, the accommodation is a tad run down and could desperately do with a revamp however the restaurant is one of the nicest Greek places I've ever tried and it feels like thats where they concentrate their efforts.
Train museum is good even if like us you know nothing about railways. Malton is fairly nearby and has a few nice shops and a lovely ice cream shop.

Stay at the Principal - they have a decent car park (rare in York) and very close to city centre. Stay in the main, old hotel building, not the annexe.Eat in town.
Visit the Railway Museum.
Principal hotel and York railway station were built at the same time and are essentially all one development created in the same style.
The "original" railway station was a terminus inside the city walls. If you google you'll find out more about it. Subsequently replaced by the modern "through" station. Gently interesting to walk past the back of the old station, I think it's an architect's office, as you make you way into town.
If you like curry highly recommend The Viceroy, service and food is top notch. Northallerton and Harrogate are both around 20 mins on the train and both nice towns to walk round with plenty of shops and places to have a nice lunch.
Wouldn't recommend Malton as posted above, very little to see there these days as lots of shops and restaurants have disappeared over the last few years. Not the busy little town it was when i lived there anymore unless its a food festival weekend.

For a really nice meal eat at Roots. It's owned by Tommy Banks, has a Michelin star and was recently named best restaurant in the UK by the Observer.
No. 1 by Guesthouse looks lovely as a hotel. Ive not stayed there but walked past loads of times and it looks fab, has an attractive looking bar and there's a spa.
For a drink I like to go and sit in the Eagle and Child. The Blue Bell is also worth a visit, decor is Edwardian and hasn't been messed around with.

We stayed there in the summer for 1 night. It was indeed lovely. I think you pay extra for using the car park. The evening meal was OK but not really what we'd normally chose, if that makes sense. There's a big help yourself snack come treat bar with fresh cakes, sweats, soft drinks, crisps etc that we visited a lot. Room was good. Staff very friendly and helpful. We'd stay again.

Here for breakfast. I go to the john smith cup every year and breakfast at this place is always perfect, nice cakes there too.

My son is at University in York.
We stayed at Middletons when we went for the open day. You can book with Tesco vouchers. Lovely hotel with parking.
If you fancy a curry, Mumbai Lounge is very good and always busy.
Railway Museum is worth a look, other than that, just have a wander around by the minster and Shambles.
Just don't do much and soak it up.
