I can wangle a spreadover in Rome for about 6 hours or so ( airport back to Airport) first time, there so i would like to get a taster to see if a few days short stay later would be a good idea

Would it be possible to have a look at, but not go for a tour of Coliseum, Vatican, and see Trevi Fountain and Spanish steps in that time ( any other worthwhile edifices welcome)

would i need to use public transport and if so do they do a Rome version of the London Travelcard, so i can hop on and of buses metro etc

TIA for any suggestions

You should be able to see, but not go for a tour of, those places. The Trevi Fountain and Spanish Steps are just on the street so no booking or tour required.

When we went we walked everywhere so can not answer whether a Travelcard is available, but I'd be surprised if something was similar was not offered. There is an express train from the airport to one of the main terminus stations which will help you make the most of your limited time.

There is quite a lot to see and do in Rome and it benefits a slower pace of exploration just taking in the place, its history, etc IMHO. My memory (pre-Covid) is that it was busy with tourists and there were lots of queues.

Enjoy your fleeting visit. There is a long weekend worth of things to do and see.

Spanish Steps and Trevi are within 10 minutes walk of each other. Another 5-10 minute walk and you're at the Pantheon.

The Colosseum and Vatican are both 20-30 minutes from The Pantheon depending on how briskly you walk. Both have admission charges and by timed tickets. The outside of the Vatican is very boring compared to the outside of the Colosseum. You'll see lots of excavated stuff on the walk to the Colosseum such as The Roman Forum. On the way to the Colosseum there is also the Campidoglio/Capitoline Museum which is free and has a decent set of steps to climb.

The only time we used the Metro was on the day we went from our hotel to the Vatican one morning as it was a trek.

Ostia Antica is nice to wander around for a few hours and quite close to the airport by cab, not much cover so weather would need to be good.

If you have a full 6 hours you could do the forum, Circus maximus, Capitoline museum, Colosseum and the baths of Caracalla which are all next to each other, get tickets before you get there though. Try drive past the pyramid of cestio too on the way back to airport. Would be a bit of a rush to do all of that in 6 hours so pick and choose a few.

Pantheon is also worth fitting in if possible, you could possibly do Vatican + Pantheon in that time. The Vatican is amazing but huge queues and best way when I was there was to go with a tour group to skip queues.

Quite easily yes

Either get the leanardo train too and from the airport as the station is right next to the colosseum, or get a taxi it’s €50 each way

Book a skip the line tour or go early to the Roman forum and then onto the colleseum, I did a 2 and a half
Hour guided tour Which is more than enough, but I felt like I didn’t need the tour guide personally

Spanish steps aren’t really much too see tbh, just some nice stairs, wouldn’t waste your time, dito for the Trevino fountain

Instead, after you leave the colosseum, walk up the road to the alter of the fatherland, it’s got big steps with a view and is more impressive than the fountain.

Then take a walk to the Patheon, which is a beautiful church, right next to that is a charming piazza where you can grab lunch, and then if you have time head to the steps of you really want too.

Rome is unlike any other city I’ve been too, you can just walk around and around every single corner is a breathtaking building, I guess because it wasn’t bombed in the war, even the immediate area within 500m of the old city is worth your time.

I don’t think you could see the Vatican too, it would be either or, the Vatican is very impressive but really is just a massive meseum you could spend days in, I would save that for a proper visit,

I would agree that you can 'see' most of the things, but a look around the Vatican will suck up a whole day.

Either do that (and accept you'll miss a lot) or do a 'drive by' (on foot) on St Peter's square and make your way down to the Castel Sant'Angelo, which is well worth a visit.

Another vote for Ostia Antica, but you can't do that and the city in 6 hours.
