This morning I read there is going to be a 72 hour strike by baggage handlers at Heathrow, starting 4am Friday 16th Dec.

I'm flying from JFK to LHR on Virgin Atlantic, with a scheduled landing of about 11am Saturday, and I will have a checked bag.

Anyone have any more details on what travelers can expect arriving at Heathrow (T3) over this period? I am assuming delays in checked bags getting through to the baggage claim area, but how long delays?...Piece of string???

I did read that Delta and Virgin may not be as affected that some other airlines. Seems like the strike will be by Menzie contractors?

Thanks

Strike days have been moved to the NYE period following a better pay offer.

You'll be fine tomorrow.

We flew from Lisbon via lhr to ncl yesterday

2 cases checked to ncl, only one made it so far.

2nd time in 2 years with ba, no issues with klm on 3 occasions....

Looking likely some of them started their strike early....

Heathrow T5 and Manchester both having issues with a lack of baggage handlers tonight. Long delays to retrieve your bag.

I flew LHR T2 to Zurich on 14 December. It was mayhem at luggage check-in. Bags everywhere.
My suitcase didn't arrive, and nor did one of my friend's.
I spent the week in Zermatt trying to chase our luggage whereabouts, and praying that it would arrive.
4 days later received a message that it had finally arrived at Zurich, but was too late for them to onward send to my hotel before our return trip.
So I collected the bag at Zurich on the 20th to fly home.
Another anxious 1 hour wait at T2 carousel for our luggage to eventually be delivered.

The mayhem seemed even worse at the arrivals hall. Left luggage piled up everywhere - even down the toilet gangway.
It seems as if the baggage handlers are working to rule, by my guess. It's making it an absolute missery for travellers, and costing the airlines £££ in compensation.
I think that the problem extends to beyond Heathrow, as we met travellers from other countries with the same fate. Tel Aviv was named as particularly disastrous.
My advice is; if at all possible, don't check your bag right now.

1 week's ski holiday with no luggage is not much fun (Though my skis did arrive).
