Lads trip to Salzburg and Salzkammergut
Discussion
Planning on a night or two in Salzburg - any suggestions for places to stay (max £200 a night) and things to do / see / good bars etc
We then plan to visit the lakes for 2 days - it will be summer so planning on hiking / swimming / outdoor stuff - but would like to have a few beers afterwards. Hoping to find somewhere like Ambleside in the Lake District where there’s a bit of atmosphere on an evening. There’s lots of different towns : lakes to pick from so hoping for some recommendations / bear of peoples experiences.
Cheers

We drove to Salzburg in 2017 and stayed at this hotel, it would be around £100 for a suite. Very friendly staff, extremely clean, fantastic buffet breakfast, ten minutes walk from the centre.
As for sights, you could do a lot worse than do a Sound of Music coach tour for a laugh. Other than that, take a trip to Zell Am Zee and the Grossglockner, for lakes and mountains. Plenty of good places to get decent beer and food, I will put a few links.

We stayed here. Very close to the train station for easy travel, and quick to get into town.

I love Zell am See but for a 1-2 night stay in Salzburg it’s a 1hr+ drive or 2hr+ public transport trip.
You have a Porsche museum come everything else just outside town https://www.traumwerk.de/
For research I always use google maps to find places, Salzburg seems to have a good selection of bars and restaurants that are well rated (I’ve only passed through) but if you’re after Austrian food by the station Braurestaurant Imlauer looks good.

This might be age-dependent, but not far from Salzburg is Hohenwerfen Castle. It's where they filmed a lot of Where Eagles Dare - there's an exhibition at the castle.
We did that, Zell am Zee and Kitzbuhel in a day's round trip four years ago.
.. And literally minutes away from the Castle is the Worlds largest icecave https://www.eisriesenwelt.at/en/We did that, Zell am Zee and Kitzbuhel in a day's round trip four years ago.
Well worth a visit

Hallstatt is the obvious choice and fairly close to Salzburg - it's probably the most photographed lake in all of Austria . The alternative is Zell am See which has a great thermal bath in nearby Kaprun - it's called Tauern Spa Enjoy!
