Have a week off which has naturally coincided with bad weather which will make the mountains unfun, and I was thinking about Ystradfelte instead.

I've done the walk before and seem to recall there being a reasonable amount of shelter from the woods. I've got the right equipment + skills etc to be safe, it's just a question of whether it will be fun or just a muddy slog of trying not to slip over every 2 paces.

With the shorter days and the travel time there's not an awful lot of slack in the timetable which is another factor in my thoughts (travelling from Bristol)

I like getting out in the weather, especially with the recent rain the waterfalls should be looking great, I'm just cautious because the mountain weather forecast is a bit grim.

Any opinions / experience? Great place to enjoy some weather without having your skin flayed off by sideways rain, or best avoided?

Matt..

It's fine in rainy weather. That's arguably the best time to go there as the waterfalls have more water.

You can also do the falls from Pontneddfechan, or embrace the mud and do the 15km loop with all the main falls.

Just be sensible and don't go there in an actual storm!

Have done it in pouring rain - it's fine and lots of waterfalls to see.

Sounds like you know what you are doing on a wet mountan so just follow the usual approach and be a bit careful on some of the stones.

Really enjoyable - must go back and do it in the sunshine one day, although the day we went there wasn't enough parking so would hate to see how busy it gets on a good day.

In the event baby had a bad night combined with persistent sinusitis meant I decided to give it a miss, perhaps friday!

Cheers for the responses

When I visited a local farmer opened up one of their fileds and was charging £5 per vehicle to park all day, the field could easily hold 100+ vehicles as it was huge! ( there was a LOT of vehicles parked in the field)
