Forgive me if this has been done to death...

Looking at a city break flying with Ryanair - booking through their website, each passenger has to select hold luggage, or none of them can (at least with the flights I chose).

Mrs L and I could get all our "necessary" stuff into one 20kg bag. It seems that, starting with Skyscanner, that using another agent to make the booking means that one passenger can specify hold luggage without the other needing to. Saving nearly £100.

Have I found a useful work-around of Ryanair's methods? - or is there going to be a catch somewhere?

If you want to add one bag then you can - as far as i'm aware, not everyone needs to have one.

Just tick the box for no bags, then when you go through to the next screen add a bag. We usually go with the priority and just carry on 2 x 10kg bags

Ryanair try to encourage you to take the first option of everyone in the party taking a bag, often at quite a cost. If you tick ‘no bag’ at first and then move on to the next page you can select just one bag, usually saving a good amount.

With these budget airlines I'd always book through their official sites rather than third party. I've used Google Flights for a flight to Turkey next year and it came back with a really cheap EasyJet option but for some reason wouldn't divert me to the carrier's site and instead using Kiwi as the intermediary to book.

When I checked later the seat prices on the EasyJet site were twice as much as what kiwi could offer me! If it was an outward flight I'd take a punt but on a return I have visions of getting to the airport and EasyJet not honouring the 'ticket' and made worse when the Boarding Pass is only available 24hrs before the flight departure.

Unless someone tells me different you'll never get a budget airline ticket cheaper than what they sell them for on their official site?

I fly RyanAir under protest as they're the only operator that gets me to Murcia but at every opportunity they try and squeeze out more money. We take 1 x hold bag (there's a tick box to deselect the option for all travellers IIRC), I travel light but invariably we never get seats next to each other unless we pay - and I don't! Mrs shanks will see enough of me at the other end and I can watch Netflix undisturbed.

You definitely can. EasyJet at least sell tickets wholesale to other operators who then sell them on, usually as part of a package holiday, TUI being a prime example. Try booking a TUI holiday for a departure date when they don’t service a particular airport and you’ll probably find it’s an EasyJet flight.
Best deal I ever managed like this was arranging a stag do pre-Covid, I got the hotel & flights via EasyJet holidays for pretty much the same price as I could get the hotel anywhere else, so effectively free travel.
Another one I discovered years ago, though not sure if it still works, is that if you book BA & a hotel either via their own holidays division or via Expedia, it automatically sells a leisure fare without needing the Saturday night away etc.

The web site tries to get you to book luggage as soon as you select the flight.

There is no need to do this just
1. Select the ticket only option for both trips.
2. You then need to enter the travelers name.
3. It then offers the opportunity to pay for selected seats, you do not need to just select the option to continue without selecting.

It will now offer you a baggage option where you can have different for both passangers. You can also select different options for return as well.
