Earlier this year I found out that I had a half-sister living in Fort Wayne and other relatives in South End and surrounding areas.
So I'm planning to visit in the Spring and meet them and maybe hire a motorcycle or car.
I don't think Route 66 is far away but where else should I be visiting please?
I love parks and small towns rather than large cities really but, as this will be my first trip to the USA I really haven't a clue
Chicago and the surrounding area is a great place to visit.
I've been there many times as my brother and his family live in the greater Chicagoland area.
What kind of things do you like?
There's quite a bit on this website, and I really like visiting Cantigny Park

If you're into sports, Chicago has some great home teams ....
(ETA: when I travelled long haul for work, I always looked for events in the city I was visiting to get out of usual bars / restaurants... ice hockey, baseball, basketball, concerts, comedy clubs, etc.)
If you wanted to rent one of those (horrible) Harley things, a trip to Milwaukee, WI, may interest you?
It's not far.

Good question
How easy is it to get to Fort Wayne and South Bend.
Anywhere where I can hire an interesting car or pick up for a week before renting a bike for two weeks.
How far out are the scenic parks / towns and areas
Any general pointers I guess about where to stay preferably with character

So it's a while ago now, but I started one of my US road trips from Chicago...

This link should take you to the trip report I wrote at the time, I imagine most of the tourist stuff still exists, though prices will be different lol
